Are you a lousy golfer like me? Never had your name engraved on the big club trophy? Make this tiny free standing caricature. A great consolation trophy for all we losers…


Supplies

Materials:


card stock

10mm (1/2”) baltic birch plywood

skewers (the kind used to make kabobs)

carpenter’s glue

1” drywall screw

primer

gold hammertone spray paint

paint brush

downloaded pdf of template


Tools:


pencil

scissors

scroll saw

drill

5/8” and 1/4” Forstner bits

1/8 “ drill bit (or same size as skewer)

1/16” drill bit

sandpaper

Philips screwdriver


Step 1: LAYOUT

Download the pdf and draw the designs on the card stock. Cut out the templates and trace the shapes on the plywood.

Step 2: CUT, SAND, DRILL

Cut out the shapes on the scroll saw. Drill out the golfer’s face with the 5/8” Forstner bit. Place a piece of scrap wood underneath to reduce tear out. Sand everything, especially the cut edges. Locate the location of the hole on the base and drill halfway with the 1/4” Forstner bit. Finish with the 1/8” bit straight through. Locate where the golfer will be. Mark the foot location and drill 1/8” through the base at this location. Mark location of the putter head.


Step 3: PUTTER SHAFT, FLAG, FINAL ASSEMBLY

Cut the putter shaft (skewer) to size. Mark the angle of the shaft on the putter head and golfer’s hand. Carefully drill through these locations with the 1/8” drill bit. Cut the flag pole (skewer) to size. Cut a piece of card stock double the size you want the flag to be. Apply glue and wrap it around the top of the flag pole. Apply glue to the bottom of the golfer’s foot, bottom of the putter head and the contact locations on the putter shaft. Put it all together and attach the golfer with the screw. (Drill a i/16” pilot hole in the foot first to avoid splitting.) Apply glue to the bottom of the flag pole and attach it. Make final adjustments and let the glue dry.

Step 4: PRIME AND PAINT

After a thorough sanding, brush on 2 coats of primer lightly sanding after each coat. When dry, spray with the gold hammertone. Optional: You may want to personalize yours with an inscription on the bottom or even an engraved plaque on the base. Some stick-on felt pads on the bottom will keep it from scratching furniture.
