Introduction: Gandalf the Grey's Staff

Gandalf the Grey, a wizard in the book "Lord of the Rings," used a magical staff that  he used to illuminate tombs, fight off goblins, and to destroy the Belrog, an ancient and terrifying monster. We recreated the staff used in the film adaption of the book series.

Materials
- Unprimed Muslin (any heavy cloth)
- 3 shades of brown paint
- 1 inch brush
- Wood glue
- Water
- LED Flashlight
- Soldering Gun with Solder
- Glue gun
-Electrical Tape Paint
- dremel
- Switch
- 3 wires of about 5 inch length
- Thick cardboard tube, about 5 feet long
- Salt Shaker

Step 1: Step 1: Wrapping the Staff

1. Mix wood glue and water in a bowl until it forms a pancake batter-like mixture. Equal amounts of each solution in the mixture.
*it is optional to add a brown paint to this mixture for a base coat
2. Soak cloth in mixture until completely soaked
3. Then, slowly wrap the cloth around the cardboard tube.
Let staff dry for 1 day
5. After the staff has dried, paint it with a combination of the different shades of paint. First add the base coat, than the details. Make it look like tree bark.

Step 2: Step 2: Making the Light

1. Pry off lid of salt shaker, leaving only the glass jar part.
2. Remove light, batteries and circuit board from flashlight.
3.  Using a saughter gun and saughter, saughter the wires to the switch, light, circuit board, and batteries.
4. Cover showing wire with electrical tape paint.
5. Make sure by flicking the switch you can turn the light off and on.
(This process might take a while, don't get frustrated like Abby did)

Step 3: Step 3: Inserting the Light Into the Staff

1. Use the dremmel to cut a hole about 3 inches from the top of the staff that is large enough to hold the lightswitch.
2. Then, thread the light through first to the top of the staff followed by the battery pack, circuit board, and finally the switch.
3. Hot glue the light to the top and make sure you can see it from the top of the staff (place the saltshaker over the light), then hot glue the switch to the hole.

Step 4: Step 4: Finishing Touches

1. Make sure the light still lights, and the switch still switches.
2. Glue the glass jar to the top of the staff, over the glued on light.
