Get Free Wireless Web on Your Motorola/nextel/boost Phone

Today I will teach you how to get free wireless web on your nextel/motorola/boost phone.

Step 1: Get the Basics Down.

for this instructable, I will be using a Motorola i450 on the Boost Mobile network. First, you will need to know your phone number, and have an e-mail account (any works). you will need to mail the phone a link to any site, BUT I have a preferable one, http://cellphonerepair.org/wap.htm . It is a collaboration of all kinds of mobile formatted pages, that will display nicely on your screen. you will want to mail it to your [e-mail] (mine would look like this "[e-mail]")

By doing this, when you click the link in the text message you have e-mailed to the phone, it avoids the authentication process of logging on to their network. ta-da, you have the web on your phone. don't stop reading quite yet!! there's more to come... XD

Step 2: Installing an HTML Browser

The browser included in the phone is called "OpenWave" it's a cheap-o browser, that can hardly interpret the html language, therefore throwing a LOT of content errors. it took me a while, but I got the solution, and it's name is Opera Mini. it's a full HTML browser, that can handle anything on the web, as long as it isn't flash, or java (app).

What I had to get:

1. USB data cable for Motorola phones.
2. Drivers for the phone (drivers make hardware work).
3. iDEN JAL (Java Application Loader
4. both the opera .jar and .jad files.
5. a text editor

1. I got the USB cable off ebay for $1.99 (4 bucks shipping)
2. www.driverguide.com has the proper drivers.

sorry folks, you'll have to subscribe to iDEN before you can get it, but it's free, and handy as all get-out

5. I used window's notepad.

Step 3: Software

Plug the USB cable into your computer, then into the phone. it will search for drivers, and will fail. so, install the drivers you got in step 2. once completed, install the iDEN JAL on your computer. run JAL, and click "connect to phone" and it should connect within 10 seconds, giving you a list of all java apps on the handset.

Step 4: Re-naming the Files, the Right Way.

so you know how to re-name files. big whoop. do you know how to do it the right way? doubtful. fret not little one, I have the answer. for this step you will need the text editor, and both the .jad, and.jar file I had you get in step 2. rename both files "mini", then open mini.JAD in the text editor it will look like this:

take a look at the end of line 9. that is telling the JAL where the .jar is located. if we renamed it, the file won't be found, so we fist that by changing the .jad file, so the line looks like this:

MIDlet-Jar-URL: mini.jar

now save the change made to the .jad file, and on to the next step.

Step 5: Installing Opera Mini

ok, so once your phone is connected in JAL, you will want to click the "Download" button it will bring up a directory, navigate to mini.jad and click "open" it should take off and load the .jar file onto the phone, once it has completed that task, disconnect the phone from the cable, flip it open go "Menu button>java applications>Opera Mini" when you open opera mini, it will do the actual installation. when you run opera for the first time, it will ask you to press random keys. no, this isn't a practical joke, it needs random data, to determine encryption. don't ask.

Step 6: All Done!

ta-da you have the full web on your phone. it will take a while to get used to how opera works, but it is the BEST browser out there. Nice thing about this little "Hack" is that it doesn't show up on your account info. I called boost mobile data support, and they said I have no record of ever accessing any web pages. There's more wonderful java apps to come, I am working on getting a functional and free GPS navigation system installed.
But until that day, my friend. you'll just have to stick to surfing instructables.com from anywhere you are.

Can you do this without the USB cord? I downloaded opera mini with my prepaid sanyo juno that I only use for the cheap internet, but being free would be even better.

Sorry to bother you but I don't feel like reading all the other comments to get my answer but I have an i425 and it doesn't work with mini-opera atleast not the one posted so you wouldn't happen to have another url that supports an i425 Motorola phone.

ehm, perhaps you didn't understand the syntax of the address; it's not dependent on the brand of the phone, but on the carrier.

DUDE, this is the best app I have ever used on any phone. But here's the great part, it works on the "new" i425. I was wondering if you could make a special little ring tone transferring "Hack" for the i425 series, those MyJAL apps are crazy to use.

Unfortunately, after 6 years of great service my i450 took a dump, and I deleted all my software, however there is a way to do that, a full step by step guide can be found here. the program you will be installing will be called "iDen webJAL" it's similar to the JAL included in this instructable, but it requires a spoofed server connection (server is run by http://harrythompson.com/), it allows ALOT of stuff to be done with these phones.

If you do choose to take this path, I wish you luck, for you will be very pissed 90% of the time, it's not a simple thing to install, but IT IS WORTH IT!

I have tried iDen webJAL more than once, and I have gotten pissed off at every time. I don't know whether it's because I'm running vista or not. I was wondering if you could use this app to download ring tones from sites that I have registered to, I can open my text, follow the link using this app, but when I try to download, it says it may need to close to download but nothing happens. Does it let me or am I gonna have to find an alternative?

you will never be able to download a ringtone directly to the phone, even if it did get put on the phone, it wouldn't be registered as being put on anyways, that's why the webjal is needed. it not only loads the data onto the phone, but at the same time places some identifying information in the phones registry.

I have used up my MyJAL MediaPAL 3.0 trial, it works great. If you could lend me a "link" to one it would be appreciated. Every time I download another trial, it's like the servers are linked and won't let me use it, it expires instantly. If webjal was EXTREMELY easier to install, that would benefit to more than a handful of individuals. But for now, I'll just remain some sort of Boost god, by installing this app on my friends cells.

Also, yes windows vista IS a problem with older software, like webjal. it's quite simple to install another version of windows on the same computer, without disrupting vista. I know this because I use Ubuntu 8.04, Windows XP, and windows Vista all on one laptop.

Remember this, it's a universal rule. "Garbage in Garbage out" and iDen webjal is far from garbage. it may be a bit of a pain to install, there are basic steps to it 1. downloading proper software 2. installing the proper software 3. spoofing the server (basically redirecting all trafic to motorola's iden server, to Harry Thompson's server) Once those are done properly, it will be your best friend.

If it did, I would check www.operamini.com with your web browser and see if it's supported. webjal will NOT load it into the phone memory, becuase of the brand, and the network type. however it may work by other means unknown to me.
