Introduction: Giant Cardboard Helmet Chair

About: I like to make stuff.
Ahh... the Super Bowl! Nothin' better than it! Or if you don't really care for football the commercials are nice too. Either way, for something this epic you need an epic place to sit, or at least to remember good ol' Super Bowl 46! In this Instructable, I will show you how to make a cheap, strong, Super Bowl XLVI themed Helmet chair. In this chair, the facemask acts as a little table, while the actual helmet is the chair. I haven't seen very many online at all, the only one I saw costed over $700. Enjoy!

Update:
Now that the superbowl is over, you can still apply this technique to any other helmet, just change the paint job.

Step 1: Materials

Here is what you'll need:
Tools:
Box Cutter
Clamps
Something Heavy (I used a big hammer)
Regular White Glue
Paint Brushes
Materials:
Cardboard
Paper Mache Materials (More on that later)
Paint

Step 2: Starting the Face Mask

First, roll up a small piece of cardboard, about 7 inches tall, this is the base of the face mask. Then, for balance, attach a small square of card board on the bottom of the roll. After that, attach the top, cut in the shape you want it to be in, then attach the front, then you're done!

Step 3: Making the Helmet

Now, similar to the face mask, make a roll of cardboard, but this time make it about 30 inches tall. Afterwards, add a square on the bottom, for balance. Here's the part that changes; cut out the shape in the pictures, then glue the circle to the top of the roll, it's about 4 ft long. Right now the template has 6 "legs" because the cardboard was too small. Cut out a strip of card board, and glue it to the template.

Step 4: Attaching the Face Mask and Helmet

Now, attach the two bases with another piece of cardboard, then add an eighth "leg", connect the helmet and face mask.
How much you add is your decision, here's a list of what I added:
  • A cross bar on the front
  • Attached all the legs to the base
  • Attached the legs together with cardboard
If you feel it isn't sturdy enough; add more. Remember, you should be able to sit on it, and place stuff on the face mask table.

Step 5: The Paper Mache

For the paper mache, take a paint brush, and brush it onto the newspaper, then attach it to the helmet. Here's the recipe I used, I ended up using two batches:
2 cups flour
2 cups water
1 table spoon salt
If you want, you could use a more complicated recipe, but this one worked for me.

Step 6: The Painting and Final Thoughts

The paint is probably the most important part. It can either make or break it. I decided to add a Superbowl XLVI Logo, and made one half Giants, and the other Patriots. I used acrylic paint.

Final Thoughts:

All in all, I'm really happy with how this turned out. If I made this again (except Vikings version, of course!) I would add more paper mache. But, I really like it, and think it was well worth the ~20 hours it took, over a span of 7 days. I hope you like it, and would love it if you posted pictures of yours. And congratulations to Super Bowl XLVI Champions, the New York Giants!
