I will apologize in advance, my saved example got caught in my file cabinet and has seen better days!

This projects is great for the classroom or at home and takes less than an hour to finish!

Step 1: Materials Needed

Materials Needed:

Paper (I'm a fan of construction paper)
Tempera Paint (you could use Acrylic but Tempera is easier to clean up)
Paint brush
Scissors
Marker
Around 30 mins of time (not a material I know)

Other Materials that can be used:

large construction paper
Glue
Glitter
Crayons
Markers

Step 2: Cut Out Your Heart!

No, I'm not sending a huntsman after you to nab your heart for the queen!

You need to cut a large heart out of paper. You can do this several ways. You can have kids fold a large sheet of construction paper in half and cut out a heart shape. (You can use my template and have them follow it)

You can print out my template and have kids draw around it and cut out the heart whole.

You can choose the color of paper you like for your heart, just remember you will want your foot to pop on the paper so make sure to pick colors that complement each other.

Step 3: Stepping on Hearts

Get out your tempera paint and start painting those toes. This is a good part for an instructor to do, for older kids you could have them buddy up with each other and paint the other ones feet.

Tempera paint can stain, let the kids know that.

It washes off easily, it's non-toxic (but remind them non-toxic does not mean edible)

It dries quickly

It's cheap

You can do acrylic but there are a lot of draw backs, however if it's in the house, and you are one on one, it would be ok, just get that paint off the foot ASAP.

Yes, I know it's sad to have your heart stepped on so young, but I promise they will enjoy it!

Once the foot is covered (use a brush or a sponge brush) have students step in the middle of their heart.

Step 4: Touch the Sole

Once the paint is dry (this happens fast and can be sped up with a blow dryer if needed) Have the children write on the hart

I love you with all my heart and sole

Have them put the year and their name.

You can have them glue this heart onto a larger piece of paper if you choose.

Since children grow like weeds, having something to remember how small they once were is a fun thing! The foot in my example has grown in a year!

Alternatives:

You could roll out a slab of clay have them cut it in a heart, and step into the heart. Then writing into the clay with a clay tool the saying. Fire the clay and have the children glaze their creation.
