Intro: Gnome Tree Stump Home

We had to cut this beautiful old oak tree down because it was dead. so we gave it a 2nd life as a gnome home.

We wanted it to have a whimsical look so I was not so interested on having exactly perfect. We left the tree about 6' tall.

STEP 1: Things You Need

What is needed for the roof top:

1 -4x8 sheet of 1/2" plywood

3- 8ft 2x4

4 bundles of wood shingles ( I found that carpenters shims worked just fine) and felt paper

Misc screws and nails

Circular saw, Miter saw. Scroll saw, Screw gun, hammer

Paint ( optional)

I built 3 roof support trusses from the 2x4s each side 42" long cut at 45 degrees then putting a little detail to the ends for that whimsical look using a scroll saw.

Then added the plywood.top and ends. Each tree is different so you would have to scale the roof to what looks good. I then added felt paper to the plywood then nailed the shingles in a random pattern. I had to trim the edges of the tree with a chainsaw a little to make the roof fit. I painted the under side with grey paint to seal the wood.

It took a few test fits and I had to trim the tree a few times. The roof is attached by a few heavy duty screws into the stump at each end .

STEP 2: The Windows

I cut the back pieces out of thin plywood and then cut small strips out of cedar for the details to the edges and window pane. I painted the area inside the windows to make it look like drapes. Then I hot glued some dried grasses to the window pane. sealed the whole thing with exterior varnish.

STEP 3: Door

To make the door I used some left over flooring that was finished. I glued 3 pieces together and let that set up. Then cut an arch on the top edge.

I found an old handle that made the door knob ( sprayed it flat black to give it antique look.

I hot glued a little diamond as a peep hole just for fun.

I cut away some of the bark so the door would look more flush. I could have made a border but this turned out ok.

That is about it, I hope you all enjoy !

Happy Instructabling !!!!

So my bark is starting to pull away from trunk, any idea how to prevent it from falling off?
Love your gnome house! You did a fabulous job! My husband and I are trying to make one this weekend. I'm trying to understand your instructions. In making a frame, your 3- 2x4's are 42 inches which I think is the width of each side of the roof and the very top; correct? How long from bottom to the top peak are you 4 sides of the roof? Thanks so much for any help you can offer!
Did you put any coating on the tree stump itself, to prevent it from drying out and cracking?
no I did not but now the bark is slowly coming off. I am fine with this as it still looks good
Hello, I need your help scaling these plans down to fit an 8 inch and 6 inch circumference tree stumps. I would really appreciate it, I need step by step instructions with measurements. Thank you for your time. Christin
