Introduction: GoPro Pole-Tripod-Handle-Trekking Pole

Since buying my Go Pro hero 4, I've been obsessed with making all kinds of mounts for it. I recently came across a Go Pro pole in Walmart that extended for selfie use and had a built-in mini tripod in the handle. Pretty cool.

We'll it was $18. bucks and if you've been follow me at all, you know that even if I wanted to smack down the 18 Washingstons, I'd rather make it myself in the shop out of what I had, just for the challenge.

Well, I had a left over small tripod leg left from another project so the gears in my head start turning...

I figured out a way to make a 3 part mount: a 40" selfie pole, an 8" mini tripod that collapses in the handle and a hand grip itself.Even a trekking pole by adding a rubber tip!

Step 1: Materials

My materials of choice for this project are as follows:

  • 1 1/2" to 3/4" PVC unthreaded adapter
  • 2 3/4" PVC unthreaded female to 3/4" threaded female adapters
  • 1 3/4" PVC 3/4" threaded male to 3/4" unthreaded female adapter
  • 1 3/4" threaded plug
  • 1 Piece 3/4" x 6" PVC pipe
  • 1 1/4" x 1-1/2" bolt
  • 3 1/4' x 7' bolts
  • 1 1/2" split ring for keys
  • 1 3/4" rubber cork with hole
  • 2 1/4" washers
  • 1 1/4" locking nut
  • 1 1/4" connecting nut
  • 1 set of JB Weld epoxy glue

Step 2: The Pole

JB weld the connector nut into the small end of the tripod leg, then JB weld the tripod leg into the 1/2" to 3/4" adapter.

Now JB weld the adapter with pole into one of the 3/4' to 3/4" threaded adapters.

Step 3: Tripod Legs

Cut the heads off the 3 long bolts and drill a small hole in the end of each to receive the split ring. I found it easier to drill a 1/16' pilot hole then a larger one to keep the final size centered on the shaft.

Now run the split ring through all 3 holes and make sure that the legs move freely.

Now comes the hardest part of the project, cutting the grooves in the bottom adapter for the legs. Carefully measure the adapter into thirds and measure down about 1/2", or a 1/4" above the middle of the adapter. Drill a 1/8" hole then a 1/4" hole. Now file any rough edges and shape the hole to fit the leg. Take your time and frequently fit the legs as you go.

Sand the inside edge of the end plug as shown to taper the end and sides. I did this on a disc sander.

Lay the legs inside the grooves and screw in the threaded plug on the bottom. The legs should fit loosely. Rotate the adapter with legs around and place on a flat surface. The adapter should not touch the surface and it should look straight. If not, adjust the legs until it looks straight.

Step 4: The Handle

JB weld the 2 adapters to the PVC pipe as shown in the drawing.

Assemble the rubber stopper and bolt as shown. Insert the stopper assembly and tighten the lock nut so the washer is flush with the opening of the top threaded adapter.

Insert the bolt legs in the other end and screw in the threaded plug.

Step 5: Conclusion and Drawing

Overall I found the pole project successful and the take apart factor adds a plus.I look forward to holding it up in the air with my Go Pro attached and using the mini tripod for group shots.

Put a rubber crutch tip on the small end and it doubles as a trekking pole!!
