Intro: Greek Village Salad

The Greek Village ("Horiatiki") Salad is a great addition to any Mediterranean-styled meal, is delicious, and ready in a few, stress-free minutes.

STEP 1: Materials

To make the standard Village Salad, you will need:

Half a cucumber
A plum tomato
1/4 onion
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup olive oil
1 oz. fresh feta cheese

This recipe is for about 2 servings; multiply as necessary.

You CAN use feta cheese crumbles, but for the best flavour, find yourself a Greek or Middle Eastern grocery store with a deli. They'll usually have several varieties of imported feta cheeses, and most places will let you taste samples, as every variety is slightly different (creamier, saltier, etc.).

STEP 2: Chopping the Vegetables

Wash and dry your veggies then peel your cucumber in a way that leaves about half of the skin on. Slice lengthwise down the middle and then proceed the cut into half-inch-thick pieces. Add in the tomato, cut up into chunks of varying shape and size. Now cut your bit of onion in half and slice each of those halves into thin half-circles. Add the chopped vegetables to your bowl if you haven't already.

STEP 3: The Dressing

Add in the salt, oregano, and olive oil and toss. Crumble up your cheese and throw in. Mix the salad again.

STEP 4: Serving

This salad can be served as a side dish, but is often served ahead of the main course. No matter how you eat it, though, try to always have some bread on hand. Greeks, in general, will be found dipping their bread into the dressing left at the bottom of the plate. We call it zumi (zoo-MEE), and it's addictive, so watch out.

Try is paired with this Easy Spanakopita.

I made this last night! I added white wine vinegar, red peppers, and red cabbage. Next time I'd leave out the peppers, but the rest was awesome!
Thanks, I'll try it someday.

When I was in Bulgaria, there was something very similar that I cannot spell, but sounded like "Shopska Sallat"
However, I am pretty sure it did not have onions...
Anyway, looks great!
