Grug Costume

This was a book character costume I made for book week.  It was cute, easy and every time one of my children wear it they get rave reviews.
I started by cutting an old sheet into wide strips, then sewed them together to make a kind of bag (one end sealed & one end opened).
I then cut brown and yellow polar fleece into strips and sewed it around "the bag" from bottom to top.  I cut the fleece into fringes and added some felt eyes and a nose.
To make it stand out in the right shape at the bottom I tacked on one of their hula hoops and pulled it out after for them to use.

Would love to make this but need more help. Cutting sheet into strips - what width? Make a sort of bag - Is it square or tapered? Gathered at top? Sorry being a bit dim I know!! Any help much appreciated.
