Introduction: HDD VU Meter
HDD VU meter is good and intresting idea, how to show hard disc drive is working by led vumeter instead simple led diode who just blinking
Step 1: Required Materials
Required materials are:
1.led vumeter(build your self or buy a kit)
2.wires
Step 2: Where Is Hdd Led Wire
On main bord of computer there are couple wires who are conected to front side and there are:
1.power on-wires
2.reset-wires
3.power led on-wires
4.hdd led-wires
5.speaker-wires
Step 3: Which Wire
which wire is hdd led, that you can look and read at the main bord(hdd led+wire,-wire)
if you failed to find the hdd led wire on main board, then just follow the (hdd led diode) from front side to the main bord this is simple way to find the wire, and after you find the wire,on the midle between main board and front side you cut the wire
ALL THIS YOU MUST DOIT WITH COMPUTER TURN OFF
AND YOU ARE BUILD THIS BY OWN RISC
Step 4: Conected the Wires Between Vu Meter and Main Bord
After the cut the wire between main bord and front side you must conected to the vumeter.
if you have old vumeter from old radio you can use ti,if you dont have it build or buy a kit
the vumeter is suplaying by 12v from your flopy or hard dis drive measure the volts before you conect to the vumeter, only positive wire of 12v you conect to the vumeter, the ground you conect from hddled, and hdd led it has positive and negative wire, positive from hddled from main bord you conect to signal in+,and negative wire from hddled you conect to ground suplay of vumeter just like on picture
Step 5: Finish
If you dont have vu meter, you must build it or buy it,or look in instructables if anyone has explained how to build the vumeter(its simple)but I cant right now write abou that.

You should really use the negative of the power supply you get 12 volts from, as the ground on the motherboard is for 5 volts so the PCB tracks are not as thick, using them for 12 volts could cause damage.

Nice instructable. The clear circuit schemes are helpful to understand the electronics of our PCs.

I take it you got a VU meter by salvaging it from a stereo or something. Nice that you turned it into an instructable.
