Introduction: Halloween on Fire
Centre piece of shapes and light
Set design piece created with plywood for the animals silhouettes. Woven Hessian sculpture with aluminum wire to make the flames.
The initial drawing was made in photoshop and then imported in AutoCAD to produce scale drawings. The DWG file was sent to a waterjet cutting company. The whole fire is backlit with an overhead projector place on the inside MDF platform of 3'-8" in Diameter. The main tool to attach everything together and to wrap the Plywood around was a Fein Drill, even cordless it was powerful. The best material to use would have been 3mm MDF. However, I had to do with what the Waterjet company already had on site. Which did complicate things a little bit and add an extra step. As you can see in one of the pictures, I had to completely soak the plywood with hot water to make the curve possible. Thanks to a Ceramic heater from the theatre that helped dry the surface of the floor quicker. Health and Safety matters a lot in a theatre!
The piece produces beautiful images to look at and at the same time projects flames on the floor.
It is definitely a long term relationship with this set for many halloweens to come.
