Introduction: Hand Dyed Rainbow Tassel Scarf

About: I love to create and I love to share ideas, so here we are!

Who would not like a nice funky rainbow scarf with a pastel dress on a hot summer day. I have created one of my one and shared the procedure with you.

Step 1: You Will Need

White cotton scarf, White cotton yarn, Dyes suitable for cotton, Dye fixer (if required), General sewing supplies

Step 2: Prepare the Fabric and Water

Wet your fabric and wring out excess water, this will help the dye take colour better.

Boil water in a large utensil and add a spoonful of salt (it will help the dye adhere to the fabric better) and the fixer (if required).

When the water is almost at the boiling point add your dye (I added 5 gm of dye to 5 liters of water, this quantity will vary with different dyes so read the label to know how much you will need). If like me you are working with powder dyes, dissolve them in some water first and then add to the boiling water to avoid lumps.

Step 3: Dying the Fabric

Add you fabric to the dye water. Make sure it is not folded or knotted. Move it around making sure it is entirely soaked. It might take some time for your fabric to reach pitch black.

Step 4: Remove, Soak and Dry

Once it is black enough for your liking, soak the scarf in cold water for a few minutes. Let dry.

Step 5: Dying the Yarn

For the rainbow tassels I cut the yarn into several 8 meter long pieces and dyed each in different colors using the same dying technique as for the scarf.

Step 6: Dyed Raw Material

Once I had dyed all my raw material it looked something like this.

Step 7: Making Tassels

To make the tassels wrap them around three of your fingers and tie as shown.

Step 8: Complete the Scarf!

Attach tassels to the scarf. I also added a few lines of running stitch using white yarn to add some contrast.

And viola, we are done!
