Introduction: Hand-Knit Thrummed Mittens
How to knit Thrummed Mittens for the fall/winter months
Remember to make 2 :)
Step 1: Materials
- 4 Size 8 double-pointed needles
- about 50-100 grams of worsted weight yarn
- Wool roving (for the thrums)
- darning needle
- locking stitch markers (or safety pins)
- about 4-8 hours of work
Step 2: Part 1 - Cast On, Cuff, and Beginning the Thumb Gusset
A video for all of these steps can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3qUnFuJGd8
Cast on 36 stitches to one needle
Slip twelve stitches onto a second needle
Slip another twelve stitches onto a third needle
There should be twelve stitches on each needle being careful not to twist make a knit 2 purl 2 ribbing all the way around the cuff for 2 inches
This should be about 13 rows of knit 2 purl 2 ribbing
After you have completed your 2 inches of knit 2 purl 2 ribbing (3:47 in the video)
Knit 4 rows of stockinette stitch (plain ole knitting on double points)
On the fifth row of knitting you need to insert a row of thrums, refer to video to know how to make and insert thrums
**Knit 5 stitches, and in the sixth stitch insert a thrum** repeat from ** to ** until all of the stitches on the 5 row are knit
After you have finished your first row of thrums you need to start increasing for your thumb gusset
To do so knit 1 stitch and then in the second stitch knit once through the front loop, don't slip the stitch off, and then knit through the back loop of the stitch, slip the stitch off
Place a stitch marker to mark where your thumb gusset goes
Knit the rest of the round, making sure to tighten the thrums as you knit them (Row 6)
Knit another round (Row 7)
For the next round you have more increases
Knit once through the front loop, don't slip the stitch off, and then knit through the back loop of the stitch, slip the stitch off
Knit 1 stitch
Knit once through the front loop, don't slip the stitch off, and then knit through the back loop of the stitch, slip the stitch off
Place stitch marker from left needle to the right needle
Knit the rest of the row (Row 8)
Knit another round (Row 9)
For the next round you have more increases
Knit once through the front loop, don't slip the stitch off, and then knit through the back loop of the stitch, slip the stitch off
Knit 3 stitches
Knit once through the front loop, don't slip the stitch off, and then knit through the back loop of the stitch, slip the stitch off
Place stitch marker from left needle to the right needle
**NOTE** at the end of this video you only have 7 stitches on the thumb gusset, you need to knit another round, and then do another increase round
Increase in in the first stitch of the round (K1 T&B) and the last stitch next to the stitch marker (K1 T&B) (9 stitches for the thumb gusset) The second video picks up after this point
Step 3: Part 2 - Increases for Thumb Gusset, Working the Body of the Mitten
A video for all of these steps can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EX1ISYGmWTA
After you have 9 stitches in your thumb gusset you need to insert another row of thrums into the 1st and 7th stitches of the round
Knit 2 full rounds of stockinette stitch
Knit once through the front loop, don't slip the stitch off, and then knit through the back loop of the stitch, slip the stitch off
Knit 7 stitches
Knit once through the front loop, don't slip the stitch off, and then knit through the back loop of the stitch, slip the stitch off
Place stitch marker from left needle to the right needle
Knit the rest of the round
Knit 3 rounds of stockinette stitch
Knit once through the front loop, don't slip the stitch off, and then knit through the back loop of the stitch, slip the stitch off
Knit 9 stitches
Knit once through the front loop, don't slip the stitch off, and then knit through the back loop of the stitch, slip the stitch off
There should now be 13 stitches for your thumb gusset
Place these 13 stitches onto stitch holders (or safety pins)
knit the rest of the row as you normally would
When you come to the big gap in the mitten where the thumb gusset occurs, take the working yarn and insert the needle as if to knit
Instead of knitting the stitch by wrapping the yarn counter clockwise you need to wrap the yarn clockwise so that the bond is VERY tight
Additionally on this row we have thrums to insert into the 6th and last stitch on every needle
Continue knitting in the thrumming pattern until your mitten surpasses your little finger
You will then need to work the deceases for the top of the mitten
(end of video 2)

Step 6: Part 5-Weave in All of the Ends
A video for all of these steps can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7QPEOlW6ms
There are 4 ends to weave in
The cuff
The start of the thumb
The top of the thumb
And the top of the mitten
If you have a difficult time weaving in ends refer to the video for help
After you have woven in all of the ends you need to softly tie down the thrums so that they won't fall out of the mitten and ruin all of your hard work
If you tie them down to hard they will disappear and you won't be able to see the cute little hearts on the outside of the mittens
YOUR MITTENS ARE NOW DONE!! YAAAAYY!!
