Intro: Hand Powered Clock

in this instructable, I will be showing you how to build a Hand powered clock.

You will need
1. a digital clock display ( already programmed)
2. a 2 gear power crank
3. tape

STEP 1: Attaching the Clock Display

Take your digital clock display and tape it to the top of your power crank.

STEP 2: Connecting the Wires

Attach the positive wire to the left terminal on the motor. Connect the negative wire to the  right motor terminal.

STEP 3: END

Congratulations! You have successfully built a hand powered clock!! =)

There's not much detail here. Is the clock powered with a battery backup to keep the time, and when cranked actually shows on the display? If so it would have the function of a clock. If it shuts completely off every time it wouldn't be very useful except to make you hand tired ;)

This would be a good way to show electricity generation at a museum or something though (although a light bulb has always been the popular choice for hand powered teaching).
It does shut off every time you stop cranking the power crank. This is something I've been trying to work around. It's not a very good design. :(
Seems like an excellent design to me, an artistic statement on the way our entire modern lives are scheduled.

I agree that it's not very practical, but the addition of a capacitor should help there, given that an ordinary clock can run for MONTHS on a single "AA" type battery, a relatively small capacitor should give you hours if not days. More like the good old fashioned mechanical clocks that needed winding every week.

Good work.
