Intro: Hanging Bike Work Stand...Perfect for Cramped Places

I've been in the market for a work stand for some time now and decided to build my own. I modified the standard pipe clamp work stand so it wll be removable and hang from the ceiling of my deck. This design is simply, cheap, and very easy to store away and allow use of the deck.

STEP 1: Go to the Hardware Store

I measured from my ceiling to what I thought was a comfortable height and had a piece of 3/4 pipe cut and threaded. I also purchased a flange mount, an elbow joint, a small section of double threaded pipe and a Pony pipe clamp.

STEP 2: Assemble the Pipe

I used some pipe tape on the joints initially and then decided to JB weld the joints so they wouldn't move. Once assembled you must then position and screw your flange into a stud on the ceiling.

STEP 3: Try It Out!

So all you do is hold the stand and screw it into the ceiling until tight and positioned where you'd like. My photos show the bike hanging in the stand without the wooden 2x4s attached to clamp. I decided to bore a hole into two wood blocks and use epoxy to secure them to the clamp. Now all I do is wrap some rags around the seat post and clamp it down. Works great and is very easy to stow away.

This worked like a charm. Thanks for the info!!
This is brilliant. It should work perfectly in my basement. I trust hanging the bike from the floorboards above alot more than mounting it into a wall where it's likely to rip out.
this is a really nice, clean/simple design (and a whole lot better than the 2x4s sticking out the wall stud i'm currently using...). it seems like the weak point of the design is the wooden clampy bit; does anyone have any suggestions for better fits in the clamp?
That is really cool I well have to try that in my garage I have a massive beam that runs down the center to hang it from. I should post my wheel truing stand that I make one time out of an old front fork.
