Introduction: Harry Potter Chess Set With Board

I love to play chess but didn't have my own set, until I came across a project idea on thingiverse for a resin or 3-d printed harry potter chess set (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4757864). I made mine pretty different from the one linked, mainly because I had less available materials. This was a way harder project than I had anticipated because I had never used a resin printer or spray paint so it was a struggle. In the photos, the black pieces dont look very detailed but all of the pieces are ridiculously detailed.

Supplies

To make this project, I used:

A resin printer (a 3-d printer would work as well)

A 16x16 inch piece of plywood

Wood stain

A sponge

Purple paint (light and dark)

A ruler

A silver paint pen

Black spray paint

Gold spray paint

A paintbrush

Step 1: The Pieces

Using the tinkercad files (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4757864) I counted how many of each piece was needed and then printed them out. After they were printed, washed, and dried I separated them into which side they were a part of and spray painted them either black or gold. After they were spray painted, I took a silver paint pen and went over the raised section of the pedestal that showed what piece each represented to make it more noticable.

Step 2: The Board

After cutting a piece of plywood to 16x16 inches, I took a ruler and drew out a row of 8 squares, that were two inches each; I kept adding lines until I had drawn the entire board. I then took a sponge and stained the entire board. I then, painted the light colored squares with a light purple; because I hand-painted the board I cleaned up the small mistakes by tracing each square with the silver paint pen. I decided the plain edges looked a little odd and took a dark purple to the sides and back of the board. To finish it all off, I labeled the two sides of the board.

Step 3: Storage

I struggled trying to think of a way to keep these fragile pieces safe for travel and storage without having many supplies (the resin printer and table saw was the schools) and finally decided to paint an old cardboard box. I put quilting squares on the bottom of the box and then put the larger pieces on the bottom. I then put a very thick layer of fabric squares on top so that I could put another layer of pieces; I finally put another thin layer of fabric for the top. This for some reason was really hard to explain so I just put pictures of the packing.
