Introduction: How to Make a Headphone Stand

This is a step by step tutorial that guides you through making a headphone stand out of foamboard. This is a simple instructable for anyone who wants somewhere to put their headphones. The Standard for Technological and Engineering Literacy you will be working in is Standard 8: applying, maintaining and accessing technological products and systems. We will be applying sequence of steps to produce a product. By following along with the guided instructions and using the appropriate tools and practices to create your headphone stand you will have completed benchmark 8D. (Grades 3-5 adult supervision required).

Supplies

For this you will need:

  • One piece of 20"-30" foamboard ~$10
  • Ruler
  • box cutter
  • hot glue gun and sticks
  • safe cutting surface
  • pencil

Step 1: Base

The first step will be to measure and cut the base. The dimensions are 12"-7". Starting your measurement from the corner of he board is a good way to limit the amount of cuts you need to make. Measure and mark your board to the appropriate lengths. Next use the box cutter to cut your piece while on the safe cutting surface. Label this piece the base.

Step 2: Standing Pieces

For the next part we will measure and cut the vertical pieces that will hold up the headphones. The dimensions are 10"-7". We will measure and cut this out 3 times because we need three of these identical pieces. Now we measure and mark our board with the correct dimensions. Then we cut along the lines. once you've cut it out you can now use your correctly measured piece to trace the two copies we cut out next. After tracing or measuring and marking the other two pieces, cut them out as well and label all of them stand.

Step 3: Supports

In this step we will be making the four support ribs that provide stability to the center of the stand. These pieces will be right triangles with a height of 10" and a base of 5.7". Measure and mark your board. As you cut this piece out keep in mind that it is not necessary for the hypotenuse to be a straight line, if you want to make it an arc or something different feel free to have fun with it. However, should you choose something with a specific orientation be sure to keep that in mind as you will be using 2 pieces on the opposite side. once you have all your pieces cut out you are ready to move on.

Step 4: Begin Assembly

Now that all our pieces are cut we are ready to start putting it together. Plug in your hot glue gun and let it heat up for couple minutes. Find your pieces labeled stand. We will be gluing these, face-to-face, in order to make a thicker piece with the same dimensions we originally cut. Apply hot glue to one side of one of the pieces and place your next piece on top. Make sure to line up all of your corners and edges. Now do the same for your last "stand" piece

Step 5: Install Supports

This step we will be connecting the supports to the base. Locate your piece labeled base and the pieces we cut for supports. Take a support piece and apply hot glue along the thin face of the 5.7" edge. Place the support lined up with a corner of the base along the 12" edge, with the 10" edge of the support facing the center. Repeat this for the three remaining supports.

Step 6: Install the Stand

Now we will be putting our stand onto our base. Find your three stand pieces you glued together. Now apply hot glue to the thin face of one of the 7" edges. Also apply hot glue to the 10" edge of your four supports. Finally, slide your stand into position. Use a paper towel to clean up any hot glue oozing out.

Step 7: Wait and Decorate

Wait for the glue to dry and congratulations! you are ready to decorate! You can also leave it as is if you don't care about aesthetics.
