Intro: Heart-shaped Ang Pao (Chinese Red Envelope)

Hello everyone,

It’s been a while since our last project.  This time round we are gonna teach you something really sweet for the Chinese New Year – craft your own Heart-Shaped Ang Pao (Chinese Red Envelope)!

Since young I’ve always been intrigued by origami, and I thought I could do something really special for the upcoming Chinese New Year, which also happens to coincide with Valentine’s Day!  After some engineering, I came up with this heart-shaped ang pao to symbolise this really special occasion.

How often do the 2 special occasions fall on the same day?  This heart-shaped ang bao succinctly symbolises the significance of the union of the 2 really special occasions. Of course, you may also use it as an envelope for your Valentine’s love note.

STEP 1: Materials

1. 80 gsm A4 size red colored papers
2. Stick glue/double side tape
3. Ruler
4. Cutter Knife/Scissors
5. Paper scorer
6. Cutting mat

Download and print template over red colored papers.
Don’t forget to fit to A4 size when printing.

STEP 2: Cut

Cut out template outlines with cutter knife.  Make sure you cut only along the definite lines, and not the dotted ones.  Remember to cut a slit between the Chinese character and words “Happy New Year”.

STEP 3: Score

Use a paper scorer to score and fold along the dotted lines
(using a paper scorer is not mandatory but if you don’t, folds won’t turn out as neat).

STEP 4: Fold

Face printed side down as shown and fold left flap inwards.  You should now have side C facing you.
Then fold bottom left corner upwards.  You should also see side A.

STEP 5: Fold

Fold the right flap inwards on top of side A and C.
Then push the bottom right corner inward such that you lay side B beside side A.

STEP 6: Glue

Apply glue (or double-sided tape) on sides A, B & C, in order to stick the flaps together and form your envelope.

STEP 7: Glue

Apply glue (or double-sided tape) on the reverse side of flaps D & E, and fold them into the pocket to paste.  When done, you should see a neat pocket.

STEP 8: Fold

Fold down the top flap.  You should be able to see the Chinese character on the top of the ang pao.

STEP 9: Fold

Push in top left & right corners, as well as the center slit to form a beautiful heart shape.

STEP 10: Insert Money or a Love Note :)

Insert your gift money / love note.  Seal the ang pao by applying glue along the edge of the bottom half of the heart shape.

Cute! I always had a love to origami... ♥♥♥
whoo! another singaporean found!! :D
:D i nv thought i would stumble upon  my fellow singaporeans....i've seen met 2 so far....
All of my cardstock is letter-sized.  I'm going to have to shrink it down a little so I can print it out.  This is really cute, and I'm going to make it and put it on my mantle with all of my other oriental decor.
Did you create the template yourself?
I would think so.

Eh, you never know.  There's a ton of copypasta in ibles, where people find images and instructions elsewhere, and post them here.
"Copypasta"?   *Right clicks*   O_o    why is there a "spaghetti" option just under  "copy"

lol sorry
i love bad jokes, and couldn't resist.
It's on their profile.

I like this!!!  I buy Chinese New Year's teddy bears from a lady in Taiwan.  Next year I might send my payment in an envelope like this!

A paper scorer is a rather specialized tool.  You might want to substitute:
the non-cutting side of a butter knife
a mechanical pencil with the lead retracted (you want to press a thin 'ditch' into the paper but not draw a line
   the edge of a coin.

Similarly, a cutting mat is specialized.  You might want to substitute a thick, no-longer-needed magazine or newspaper (be careful that the newsprint doesn't mark your project, though).
Yup! I engineered the template from scratch. Didn't steal it from any where. :S Hope you like it! :D
