Intro: Hex Ring for Less Than 1$

In this instructable you will learn how to make a custom fitting hex-nut ring.

STEP 1: Tools Needed

-hex nut
-dremel
-polishing compound/polishing bit
-large and small sanding bits
-table vise
-hacksaw
-eye and lung protection
-work gloves
-medium and fine sanding sponges
-WD40
-file
-patience

STEP 2: Sizing

Sand out the threads. Once they are removed, use the larger sanding bit.
Then use the fine grit bit to size the ring to your finger.

STEP 3: Thickness Adjustments

Thickness of your ring is a personal preference. I like mine a bit thinner, so I sawed about 1/3 off my hex nut.

STEP 4: Roughing the Shape Out

In this step you will want to round out all the sharp edges and corners. you will also want to even out any hacksaw marks. Remember that it doesn't have to be perfect, because you still have to sand it.

STEP 5: Curving the Inner Part

STEP 6: Sanding

THIS IS A CRUCIAL STEP. In order for the ring to fit comfortably, you must smooth out any imperfections. Make shure to sand the direction you prefer it to shine when you finish.

STEP 7: Polishing

Clamp your dremel onto your table vise. Use a generous amount of polishing compound, and bring your ring to a shine.

Just a word of advice: my cousin gave my brother a ring very similar to this a long time ago, and although it seemed to fit him comfortably, as the day wore on and his fingers swelled, the ring became too tight. It was a much thicker ring than this, and the local fire department didn't have anything that would remove it. None of the traditional methods worked, and my parents finally ended up having to cut it off his finger using a combination of a drill press and a hack saw. So please, make sure you size your ring accurately, it's very hard to get off if you don't. :)

That's a danger with any ring, really, it's just more dangerous with rings made out of hard materials. The class ring for my college is a simple titanium band. One of my friends was wearing hers and her finger swelled up so much while she was asleep that she had to go to the hospital. Of course they didn't have anything that could cut off the ring and it was a huge hassle, to say the least!

Awesome ring, I think I'll have to make one!
