Introduction: Hexagonal Pen Stand
Hey everyone, In this instructable, we will be learning how to make a simple Hexagonal Pen Stand for your desk. This is a minimalist design and is a great gifting option for students, and offices alike.
Step 1: Designing and Bill of Materials
The first step would be to prepare a list of materials needed for the project and what tools will be needed. As we can clearly observe from the image, the pen holder is going to be designed in 2 parts, top and bottom. The to part consists of a hexagon and bottom part would be a square. Following is a list of materials/equipment that we will need:
- Wood : Plywood 2 centimeters/ 20mm thick
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Clamp
- Gloves
- Jig saw or circular saw
- Miter saw
- Tape
- Wood glue
- Elastic rubber band
Step 2: Cutting the Plyboard
Take a plyboard and measure it 9cm in height using measuring tape. After that , simply clamp it to your work table.
--
After that , simply use a circular saw or a jigsaw to cut through the plyboard.
Step 3: Cutting the Faces of Pen Holder
Now , as we have obtained a single sheet of ply board with a height of 9cm, next step would be to cut 6 equal parts from the same sheet with each part having a width of 5cm.
--
For doing so, we will be using a Miter Saw.
--
Also, we need to cut bevel angles of 30 degrees on both the sides of each face, so we will set the bevel angle at 30 degrees
Step 4:
So, what we will do is measure the width using a measuring tape and clamp a piece of wood to miter saw so that all the pieces come out with a width of 5cm.
--
After that, all we have to do is chop the pieces from one end and then flip them and cut them again to obtain 30 degrees bevel cut on both the sides.
Step 5: Joining the Faces Together
Once we obtain 6 faces as shown in images , we will join them together using masking tape or any other tape from their flat surfaces.
--
After that , we will glue all the faces together from angular cuts side and fold them to form a hexagon.
--
In order to hold the hexagon in one fixed shape, we can use elastic rubber bands and wrap them around the Hexagon.
Step 6: Making the Base
To make the base, we will need to cut a square piece of dimension 11cmx11cm.
--
To make that we used a table saw from our makerspace.
--
Simply set the table saw at 11 cm and make the cuts.
Step 7: Final Assembly
Once the base is made, all we have to do is join the hexagon and base together using wood glue.
--
After pasting them together, place a heavy object such as a book on top of the pen holder and leave that to dry.
Step 8: Paint and Polish
After the glue is dried, we can simply remove the rubber bands and tape
--
Next step would be to paint and decorate the pen holder in order to give it a nice look.
--
We used woodstain available from local market to paint it and linseed oil to polish it.
--
We can also use clear coat spray or wood worker's clear polish to give it a shine.
--
So, what are you waiting for, gear up and make the pen holder for yourself , or for your friends, and while you're at it, please vote for our contest entries!! Cheers!!
