Introduction: Holiday DIY: Mason Jar Snow Globe
Get into the holidays and make your own vintage mason-jar snow globes! Use our Snow Globe DIY Kit, which includes a limited-edition blue mason jar, four miniature trees, and a package of shimmery ornament flakes.
Step 1:
- Medium-sized mason jar
- Glue gun or glue stick
- Small figurines or trees
- Fake powdered snow
- Scissors
- Small scoop/tablespoon
Step 2:
Clean the jars and remove the lids. The bottom of the lid should be facing up since it will be the base of the snow globe.
Step 3:
Arrange the trees and figures (if using) to make sure everything fits properly in the closed jar.
Take your tree and hot glue gun, and apply enough glue to cover the base of the tree.
Place the tree on the lid. Be sure to avoid placing the tree on the sealing compound of the lid (the red band).
Press firmly and hold for 10 seconds. Continue this step until you’ve glued all of your trees or figures into place. Let set for a few minutes.
Step 4:
While the glue is setting, add about 3 to 5 tablespoons of powdered snow to the jars you should have no more than an inch at the bottom of the jar, depending on your preference.
If you’re using our Snow Globe DIY Kit, pour in the package of shimmery ornament flakes.
Step 5:
If you’ve used a strong enough adhesive, you can add water to fill the jar. Screw the lid on tight, turn upside down, and shake gently.
Step 6:
You’re done! You can also add ribbon or decorative paper to the jar lid — just measure the width, cut to desired length, and glue to the lid.

Glitters are commonly used for homemade snow globes/snowstorms - usually white or silver, but occasionally 'holographic' (though there's no reason you couldn't use colours to match a scheme). There are lots of different grades from 0.002 square inches (1.3 mm2) to 0.25 square inches (160 mm2) (Source: Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glitter), and you'll find them easily on Amazon and ebay.
It's also sometimes recommended to add a teaspoon or so of glycerine to thicken the water ever so slightly, for a longer-lasting 'snowfall'.

This looks good - I've been looking for snow globe ideas this past week, and this makes me think adding a drop or two of food colouring to the water in my own creations might be an interesting idea, since I can't easily get hold of coloured jars, could control the strength myself and assume the cost of posting the kit to the UK would be prohibitive.
Also, of course, the combination of me being me with the Instructables site means I want to make something more --- involved..!

I made this snow globe. I think I need to modify it a bit, because the snow floated, the figurines' view was blocked by the screw part, and my water turned green from my tree. However, this craft is creative and I enjoyed making it. Merry Christmas!

I am concerned that over time mold and/or bacteria will grow and wreck this. Do you add any sort of preservative, possibly ethyl alcohol?

Do you have trouble getting the glue to hold after it's been in the water a while?

@dickerson888: one solution could be to reapply glue but use gorilla glue or other water proof glues.

@ScoutDadNC: We include the snow flakes in our Snow Globe kit: http://www.fairgoods.com/products/diy-snow-globe-kit. They should also be available at your local craft store. Thanks for trying this project out!
