Answers for the Make- To- Learn Youth Contest
What did you make?
I made 2 loaves of wheat bread
How did you make it?
Well I got the idea because we didnt have any bread:) And its healthier to make your own.
Where did you make it?
I made it at home, in the Kitchen.
What did I learn?
I learned that if the water is too hot you will kill your yeast, and if you dont knead it enough then the gluten will not activate and the bread will not rise as nice.
Step 1: Ingredients and Supplies
2 1/2 cups warm water
4 tsp. dry instant yeast
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1/4 cup oil
2 tsp. salt
4-5 cups flour
Measuring cups and spoons
2 bread pans
Step 2: The Yeast
Take the first 4 ingredients and mix it in your bowl, it should be a little bubbly. You dont want to make the water too hot or you will kill the yeast and you dont want to make it to cold or it the yeast will not rise. Let your yeast rise until it doubles in size( about 10 min). It needs a dark place to activate so I usually put mine in the oven, but you can just put a towel on top.
So, after your yeast has doubled in size, you want to add your oil and salt. If you wanted to put raisins, seeds, oats, dried fruit, or nuts in your bread now would be the time. Now you want to start whisking in your flour about 1/2 to 1 cup at a time. i used white and wheat flour so I alternated( 1 cup wheat, 1 cup white..ect) You wanna mix it until you cant use the whisk anymore. Now, comes the fun part. Using your hands, start to knead your dough. ITS GOING TO STICK TO YOUR HANDS!!!!! But the stickier your dought the softer your bread will be. You dont want it to be too soft or your bread will crumble. Now, add the rest of your flour( you might need some extra, it depends what kind of flour you are using). Knead your dough into a ball and set it into your bowl. cover it with a damp paper towel and set it in the oven and let it double in size.
Okay, we are almost done.Preheat your oven to 315 degrees. Your dough ball should have doubled in size, take it out of the oven and punch it once in the middle.( I dont know why you do that, thats what my mom and Grandma taght me) I weigh by dough so that i can get even loafs, so at this point you can wiegh your dough in a baking scale.Flip it out onto a clean counter/ table space and separate it into 2 even parts. Roll it out into a long rectangle about 1/2" thick, once you have your rectangle start at one short end and begin to roll the dough frm one end to the other. You wanna keep it kinda tight,so that it doest look messy.
Step 5: Finished!
After you roll up your dough, place it in a greased bread pan. and let it rise again. When it rises just over the top of the pan (about 25-30 mins) it is ready to go in the oven. Now i place my bread on the top shelf and place a cookie sheet on the bottom rack to keep the bottom from burning. Bake your loaves for 45 mins. Remove from the oven and take it out the pan so that it doenst sweat. You can knock/ tap on the top of the bread and if you hear a hallow sound it should be ready. Let it cool and enjoy:)
