Introduction: Homemade Marshmallows and Peeps
Who doesn't love marshmallows? If you do, you will love how simple and delicious they are to make. And you definitely need sugar. Below is the recipe and then I will show you how easy they are to make.
3 packages unflavored gelatin
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
1 cup of cold water
1/4 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup Confection sugar
I found the recipe on Food Network.
Step 1: Step 1: Gelatin
You will need a mixer that has a wire whisk attachment. This is very important because you do not want to do this by hand. First take the gelatin and mix it with 1/2 cup of cold water. Mix this in the bowl you are going to whip the marshmallows in later.
Step 2: Step 2: Sugar
Now mix the granulated sugar, corn syrup, 1/2 cup water and salt in a pot on the stove. Heat the mixture until it reaches 240 degrees on your thermometer. This will take a few minutes. Now remove it from the heat.
Step 3: Step 3: Mix Well
Now you are going to turn your mixer on with the gelatin and start mixing the gelatin. Slowly pour the hot syrup into the mixer. Once you have it all in the bowl mix for another 15 minutes. Now add the vanilla and mix until it is mixed through out the marshmallow fluff. It will turn into a bowl of marshmallow fluff. It is very sticky but it washes out easily with hot water.
Step 4: Step 4: Put in Dish
Take a 9x13 casserole dish and spray or coat with some type of vegetable oil. Sprinkle the entire container with confection sugar. Pour all the marshmallow fluff in the dish and sprinkle with more confection sugar on top. The sugar makes it easier to flatten the top of the marshmallow in the container. Now let it set for 4-6 hours before cutting.
Step 5: Create the Marshmallows
Now take the block of marshmallow and put on a cutting board. You can cut it into small or large cubes. If it is sticky you can put the knife in hot water and it slices easier. Then roll the marshmallows in confection sugar.
Step 6: Create Your Marshmallow Peeps
I used half for marshmallows and half for peeps. Now just cut them with a cookie cutter. They are sticky on the sides so I brush a small amount of water on the top and cover with sugar sprinkles. The extra pieces you have are great in hot chocolate. Now enjoy.
