This handmade aquarium gives kids a fun and interactive way to learn about marine science and oceanic life. It can help foster interests in the scientific field of study, while also serving as fun decor in the house or bedroom.

Supplies

Mason jar
Tap water
Aquatic gravel/rocks/gemstones
Small plastic aquatic plants
Blue food coloring (optional)
Small plastic fish
Electronic, battery powered light

Step 1: Rinse and Wash

Before adding the materials to your aquarium, rinse and wash the gravel, plants, and mason jar. This will help keep your aquarium clear and visible.

Step 2: Plant Life

After all materials are clean, add 1-2 plastic aquatic plants to the mason jar. Place plants sturdily on the bottom of the jar.

Step 3: Rocks and Gravel

Add about an inch of your chosen gravel to your mason jar. Cover the bottom of your plants so that they stay in place. Smooth out the gravel layer to make it even and flat.

Step 4: Time to Submerge

Fill a bowl with tap water and add 1-2 drops of blue food coloring. Stir the water until the color is fully dissolved and even (optional). Slowly add water to the mason jar until it is almost full.

Step 5: Introduce Your Fish

Once the aquarium is set up, place plastic fish into your new aquarium.

*For the purpose of this demonstration, I am using a motor powered fish. This is NOT required*

Step 6: Tighten and Close

To make sure your aquarium and fish are safe, tighten the cap onto the top of your mason jar.

Step 7: Let There Be Light (ADULT SUPERVISION REGUIRED)

Before placing your new friends in their new home, place a battery powered light on the surface you are planning on placing your aquarium (optional). Turn the light on and place your aquarium on top.

Step 8: Project Complete!

Your aquarium is finished and your new friends are here to stay! You can use your aquarium as a night light or set it out on display for others to see.
