Introduction: Honda Ruckus LED Blinkers Swap

Honda Ruckus LED Blinkers swap.

The Honda Ruckus has provided me countless hours of fun ridding and working on it. I purchased this Ruckus a few years back as a way to get around town. Unfunnily the Ruckus suffered an accident resulting in some cosmetic damage to the OEM blinkers. I grew tired of looking at the crack in the blinker and decided it was time to preform my first modification to the scooter since I bought it. The purpose of this instruction set is explain and show the fairly easy process of preforming an OEM to LED blinker swap.

Step 1: Part 1: Preparing for the Swap.

1. Gather tools and hardware.

a) The hardware for this project consists of,

- the LED blinker relay purchase from, theruckshop.com,

- prewired diode kit,

- LED turn signals of your choice. All links to parts are down below.

b) Tools will consist of basic household tools.

- medium sized Philips head crew driver.

- Wire cutters

- 8 mm socket (this may just be my scooter)

- 10 mm socket

- Solderless connectors (available at any hardware store or online)

Step 2: Part 2: Expose the Wiring:

2. The removal of these body panels will expose the wiring for the relay and turn signals and allow the installation of the new components.

a) Removed keys from ignition, and properly secure the scooter. Kick stand is acceptable from this project.

b) Remove the four screws that hold the battery box cover on.

-Tilt the cover back slightly until no more resistance acts on the cover.

-Turn the handlebars left and up on the cover.

-Turning the handlebars right should allow for the cover to be complexly removed.

c) Remove the headlight assembly,

-Three screws hold the luggage rack on one at the top of the rack.

-The other two are located behind the head lights, these can be tricky to remove due to their location.

-Caution the headlight assembly is no longer supported.

3. Third will be to remove the OEM blinker relay.

a) Unplugging the blinkers (Front)

-On the drivers’ side of the scooter disconnect the white and black wires from the Orange and light blue wires. (These are the positive leads for the blinkers)

-Remove the two black wires feeding into the green grounding wire.

-Using a wrench remove the blinker from the headlight rack.

b) Rear blinkers wiring is located before the rear lights under the plastic decking and held by a bendable clip.

-Bend the clip holding the wires down to access the wires.

-Process is very similar to the front apart from colors, unplug the blue and orange from other blue and orange wires.

-Unplug the green grounding wires form each other.

c) Remove the existing blinker relay take note of which color goes where.

-Disconnect the three wires running into the relay

-Remove the existing relay, this will require some force do not be afraid to pull on the rubber holder.

-Slip the new relay over the mounting tab.

-Reconnect the three wires to the new relay in the same orientation as the old relay. (the relay also come with its own diagram this is a very helpful resource incase the new relay has a different connecting style.)

Step 3: Part 3: the Swap

4. Wiring the Diode

a) Remove the front panel

-Three screws hold this panel one two are located at the very bottom on an angle and the third is located on an extrusion on the left side of the scooter near the electrical cooling fins.

-Consult wiring diagram.

5. The fifth step will be to remove the original blinkers.

a) Using a 12 mm wrench remove the blinkers form the luggage rack and the rear taillight assembly.

b) The rear cover is removable, can help make the process easier.

6. This step will be how to connect the wires from the scooter to the new LED blinkers.

a) Install the new blinkers in place of the old ones.

b) Connect wires

-The new blinkers use a different coloring system. Red is now the positive this will either Orange or blue (Orange is right blinker; blue is left blinker)

-The black wires now the ground wires.

-This is true of both front and rear lights.

-Test the blinkers to ensure wires are properly ran,

-If blinkers don’t appear to in the correct direction according to the switch on the handlebars, this is not a problem switch the orientation of the blinker wires.

Step 4: Part 4: Reassembly

7. Optional but recommended

weather proofing

a) Wrap weather proofing around the blinker wires. Plastic conduit was used on this scooter because it was laying around. If you would like to go the extra mile heat shrink would also work great.

b) To secure the diode wiring group the wires with a zip ties and, potently zip tying the wires in place using surrounding frame.

8. Reassembling the scooter and running the new wiring out of the battery box.

a) Reinstall the front panel and the head light assembly.

b) Position the battery box for reassembly

c) Restrict the new weather proofing and guide the wire into the flare out as you reassemble the battery box, Wiggling the handlebars help to ensure the battery box goes on trouble free,

d) With the battery box sitting correctly insert and tighten the screws.
