Intro: How to Make Oobleck!

Oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid. If you want to know what that means, click on the link. The name "Oobleck" was originally from a Dr. Seuss book, but has come to refer to a mixture of cornstarch and water that has non-newtonian properties.

STEP 1: How It Works


This is obviously not my video, but it does a fantastic job of explaining why oobleck works the way it does.

STEP 2: How to Make It

Mix cornstarch and water at a ratio of approx. 2.5/1. Stir this mixture with a spoon. Mixing the combination may be difficult due to the nature of oobleck. You now have your own non-newtonian fluid! Enjoy playing with your oobleck!

STEP 3: Coloring the Oobleck (optional)

This is not the best way to get a uniform color throughout. To do that, you'll need to dye the water before mixing it with the cornstarch. My way of dyeing the oobleck involves placing a couple drops of a different color in each corner, and then swirling it throughout the mixture with my finger.

cornstarch might be costly... What is the need to make an oobleck

Nobody NEEDS to make oobleck, and it doesn't have any obviously useful functions, but it is great to make for a science fair project, or for fun!

Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid, that solidifies when a significant force is applied, but acts like a liquid most of the time.

Oobleck is always so much fun! I like how it looks with the food coloring in it!
