Introduction: How to Make Tuna Training Treats for Your Dog
These treat can be used for other uses than training, I just loved the alliteration! Tuna treats are easy to make, use only three ingredients AND baking time is a mere six minutes in the microwave!! Also, you can substitute the tuna for any fish that you want.
If you loved this tutorial, I have a bunch more over at my blog.Step 1: Ingredients
You will need;
One egg, a can of tuna in oil and 3/4 of a cup of flour (any kind).
Step 2: Preparing the Tuna
Tuna right out of the can will be in pretty big chunks and they need to be minced into smaller pieces with a knife.
Step 3: Adding the Egg
In a separate bowl, beat the egg and then add it to the tuna. Mix the two ingredients well so that the result looks like the next picture
Step 4: Adding the Flour
Add the flour a little bit at a time. Depending on how oily the tuna is, you might not have to use the entire 3/4 of a cup of flour. What you want is for the batter to have the consistency of mashed potatoes which you can see in the next picture.
Step 5: Baking the Treats
Spread the batter evenly into a microwave safe dish. There is no need to oil the dish since the batter already contains oil from the fish.
Total cooking time is 6 minutes. If you want chewier treats, cook the treats for 4 minutes. Microwave on HIGH in 2 minute increments to check on the cooking process, since fires in the microwave aren’t cool. When you have gotten the treats cooked the way you want them to be, remove the entire cake with a spatula and transfer to a plate to cool.
Step 6: Cutting Up the Treats
Cut the treats into strips and then into cubes. the beauty of baking these treats is that you can make them as big or as small as you want them. If you cut the the treats into small enough pieces, cats can enjoy them, too! Since these treats do have oil in them, it’s best to store them in the fridge to prolong shelf life.

Can I make it with tuna in water? would I add a dash of vegetable oil to keep them together?

I make these with tuna in water and add 1 T of bacon fat. I also use WW flour and add some wheat germ. I keep the treats in the fridge but they rarely last more than 2 weeks as my puppy loves them. I would guess you could use tapioca flour or almond flour if your dog has issues with wheat.

How long do these keep refrigerated vs not refrigerated?

I'm just curious about how long of a shelf life these will have in the fridge. Mostly because my dog absolutely loves tuna and fish products and I can't find anything fish flavored for dogs in the stores... (I've had to start giving her those freezed dried sardine treats for cats)
Also, for a dog with a sensitive stomach whats the doggie diarrhea degree on these, do you know?
*goes off to look for can of tuna to test them out*

You could try vinegar powder as a preservative too. Dust the food product w/ this natural powder to have a longer shelf life - but it will change the taste. Experiment and have fun!

The shelf life is probably 3 or 4 weeks in the fridge, but they probably won't last that long :)
As for the diarrhea aspect, my dog has a cast iron stomach so I really don't know. If you're worried about the oil irritating puppy's stomach, just try to spoon most of the oil out before you mince the fish.

The easiest way to get the oil out is to use canned tuna, can opener it, leave the lid on and squeeze the oil out by pushing the lid down into the tuna can and dump the oil. (this works w/ the water tuna too ;-)

If you make the cubes small enough, kitties can have them too.
