Intro: How to Read Music

STEP 1: The Staff

There are 5 lines and 4 spaces in the staff. The staff is the most basic thing in reading music. The staff holds all of the notes.

STEP 2: Treble Clef

The treble clef includes the line notes: E G B D F ; and the space notes: F A C E .

STEP 3: Bass Clef

The bass clef includes the line notes: G B D F A ; and the space notes: A C E G

STEP 4: Parts of a Note

Note head: this is an oval shape that is either open or closed, it tells the performer what note to play
Stem: this is a thin vertical line that is attached to the note head
Flag: curved stroke attached to the end of the note

STEP 5: Time Signature

Time signature shows the way the notes are played.
The top number shows how many beats in a measure
The bottom number tells you the note value that receives that beat

STEP 6: Notes

Quarter notes: each note receives one beat
Half notes: each note receives two beats
Whole notes: each note relieves four beats
Eighth notes: each note receives half a beat
*each flag cuts the time value of the note in half
