Introduction: How to Build a Brick Spiral Pier

About: I'm just finishing up building my wood fired pizza bus. I may make an instructable on how I built it later. Opening Fall 2023, hopefully...

I will show you how to use brick to create a spiral pier.  I made this project at my house for my house numbers to go on at the end of my driveway.

Step 1: Digging and Pouring Concrete

I dug a hole 12 inches deep and put gravel down.  I mixed 3 bags of cement to pour footers.  I let the footer set up for 2 days.

Step 2: Starting the Spiral Pier

It is very important to lay your first course of brick level and square.  Once the first course is done, start on the 2nd course.  You want to off-set the 2nd course by 1/4'' or 1/2'' depending on how fast you want the spiral to spin.  Again, make sure the 2nd course is level and square.  I chose to off-set the courses by 1/4'' on this project.  Just keep in mind that every course you go up, you need to keep off-setting the courses 1/4'' or 1/2'' to get the spiral effect.

Step 3: Finishing the Spiral Pier

Once you get to the height you desire, you have to fill in the center.  I used the dirt to fill center.  I poured concrete on top of the dirt on the last 2 courses and capped it off.  I also put weep holes in between the 1st and 2nd course.  About half way through the project I struck the joints.  You have to let the mortar set up between half hour and 2 hours depending on humidity and how wet the mortar is.  If you strike the joints while wet, you will make a mess on the face of the brick.  It took 6 bags of ready-mix mortar mix to do this project.
