Introduction: How to Build a Wine Carrier
If you are looking for a last minute wood gift for a loved one, this wine carrier might be a great option. A few 1x4 scrap boards, wood glue and a brad nails will help you create this rustic project. The best part about this project is that you only need a few hours to assemble everything together.
If you are beginner, this project is the perfect opportunity to leave the excuses at the door and start building. Check out my blog for hundreds of woodworking plans.
Step 1: Cutting the Components
First of all, you need to cut the components for the wine tote. Mark the cut lines on the boards and get the job done with a saw. Drill a starting hole and use a jigsaw to make the finger hole. Afterwards, smooth the edges with sandpaper.
You can buy the strips of wood from your local DIY store, or you can make them using a table saw. Use fine grit sandpaper to smooth the cut edges.
A - 2 pieces of 1x4 lumber - 5"
B - 1 piece of 1x4 lumber - 8"
C - 1 piece of 1x4 lumber - 12"
D - 4 pieces of 1x2 lumber (1/4" thick) - 9 1/2"
Step 2: Assembling the Frame
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the bottom component. Clamp the sides and align the edges with attention. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square. Insert 1 1/4" screws to lock the components together.
Step 3: Fitting the Handle
Center the handle to the bottom of the wine tote. Drill pilot holes and insert 2" screws, after making sure the corners are square. Add glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure.
Step 4: Fitting the Sides
Fit the 1x2 strips of wood to the sides of the tote. Add glue and use 3/4" brad nails to lock the rails into place. Align both ends of the strips of wood for a neat appearance.
Step 5: Applying the Finish
After assembling the wine tote, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Smooth the surface with sandpaper and make sure there are no gaps between the components. Apply a few coats of stain to enhance the look of the wine caddy.
