Introduction: How to Change Your Car's Oil

Start by gathering the tools needed for completing the job.
It helps to run your car engine for a few minutes and allow it to get to normal operating temperature.

Supplies

Jack
Jack stands or hoist
Drain pan
Socket wrench
Towels or rag
New oil
New oil filter
Funnel

Step 1: Safety Precautions

Never attempt to change your vehicle’s oil while the engine is running
Always make sure vehicle securely lifted by jack stands or hoist before working underneath vehicle.
(Never go underneath a vehicle being lifted by a jack)
Engine may be hot be careful not to touch with bare skin

Step 2: Lift Your Vehicle

Apply parking brake
Lift vehicle to gain access to oil drain plug and oil filter
Always support a lifted vehicle with jack stands or safety blocks

Step 3: Drain the Old Oil

Place drain pan directly under oil drain plug
Use a socket wrench to remove drain plug
Allow old oil to drain
Clean drain plug with towel or rag then reinstall it
(Note: removing the oil fill cap at the top of the engine will allow the oil to drain faster)

Step 4: Replace Oil Filter

Move drain pan under oil filter
Remover the old filter
Inspect the engine block to insure the old gasket ring did not stick to the engine, if it did then remove it
Fill the new filter with clean oil
Coat the gasket ring on the new filter with clean oil
Install new filter

Step 5: Fill Engine With New Oil

Remove drain pan and lower the vehicle back to the ground
Remove oil fill cap at the top of the engine
Place funnel into the open area and fill with clean oil
Place cap back when finished

Step 6: Finishing Touches

Allow oil a few minutes to settle the check engine oil levels to ensure it’s full
Inspect for leaks
Start engine and ensure it is running smoothly
