How to Change the JBL Xtreme 1 Bluetooth Speaker Batteries

Eventually batteries expire or won't hold a charge any more. I replaced my Li-ion battery in my JBL Xtreme 1 bluetooth speaker because I was tired of keeping it plugged in the wall. It wasn't really portable/mobile.

!Cautionary Note! - I am obviously an amateur do-it-yourself repair - taking apart any electronics will invalidate your warranty. I hold no responsibility if YOU damage your electronics because you follow these steps. This is purely for educational purposes.

Supplies

Tools Needed:

#1 Philips screwdriver
Double ended thin metal pry tool
Bent needle nose electrical pliers
5000 mAh Battery for the JBL Xtreme 1 (first generation only)

Step 1: Finding the Zipper Back Screws

Open zipper back
Find three (3) screws within the zipper area above the auxiliary jack and power jack. Remove and keep track of them.

Step 2: Pry Zipper Back Panel

Using double ended pry tool, pry the outline of the back panel. All "snap" together ends.

Step 3: Remove Plastic Panel Screws

Remove screws on the clear plastic panel using the Philips screwdriver. Should be eight (8). Remove and keep track of them.

Step 4: Pry Plastic Panel Slowly

Using the pry tool pry off the clear plastic panel around the rubber edges. Careful NOT to "yank or remove" the braided wire. Leave braided wire dangling.

Step 5: Remove Screws Securing Mesh Covering

Remove two (2) screws at the ends which hold the mesh covering.

Carefully remove mesh covering and put aside.

Step 6: Pry Speaker Coverings

Note the orientation of the battery wires (which side the wires are going). This is speaker side you are taking off.

Using pry tool, pry tabs at the connecting at speaker ends

Step 7: Remove Screws for Carrying Strap

Remove holding screws on handle loops and on speaker end covers.

Remove speaker covers.

Step 8: Remove Screws Holding Speaker

Remove "inside" screw holding the speaker.

Remove speaker.

Step 9: Remove Battery Connector

Locate the connection for the battery.

Using bent needle nose pliers, pull the white connection tab. Pull straight vertically up from the circuit board.

Step 10:

Feed/push back battery wires to where the battery is located and carefully pull the battery up.
Replace with new battery, feeding the new battery wire through the same hole.
Reconnect the white connector for the battery.
Reverse steps reassembling the speaker.
