Introduction: How to Cook a Perfect Potato Bake
One of my all time favourite side dishes is potato bake! The soft, creamy potatoes with the melted cheese makes this dish a winner!
Ingredients Potatoes
- 1 Onions
- Heavy Cream
- Grated Cheese
- Olive oil
- 1 Tbsp Onion Powder
- 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder
- 1 Tbsp Sweet Paprika
- Salt and Pepper
Step 1: To Start Off, Slice Two Onions Into Strips.
You will need 5 to 6 large potatoes.
Cut them into slices about a ¼ of an inch thick or half a cm.
Add the potatoes to a large bowl.
Step 2: Add to the Potatoes.
- Salt and Pepper
- 1 Tbsp Onion Powder
- 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tbsp Sweet Paprika
- 1/2 Tbsp Ground Celery Seeds
Finally, a bit of olive oil to help the seasoning stick to the potatoes.
Mix the potatoes with the seasoning, making sure they are fully coated.
Step 3: Make a Single Layer Using the Seasoned Potatoes.
Then a thin layer of the sliced onion.
Followed by a thin layer of grated cheese.
Pour over some cooking cream.
Step 4: Repeat the Layers Until You Get Close to the Top of the Pan or Dish.
For the final layer add extra grated cheese and no cream.
Step 5: Add Your Lit Chimney of Charcoal to the BBQ.
Setup the BBQ for indirect cooking.
This could also be done in the oven.
Step 6: Cover With Foil.
The reason for covering in foil is so the potatoes bake in their own steam.
Also, we don’t want the cheese to brown yet.
Cook the potatoes with the lid on for 1 hour.
After 30 minutes rotate the pan.
Step 7: After an Hour the Potatoes Should Be Nice and Soft.
Cook for another 10 to 15 minutes uncover so the cheese can become golden brown.
Step 8: Done!
Make sure you let the potatoes cool before serving otherwise they will be quite hot and you don’t want to burn the roof of your mouth.
Just ask my wife!
This potato bake is packed full of flavour and is really easy to make.

I used to make something similar but with layers of ham (just another way to get rid of leftover holiday ham). I like your recipe (and I can't remember mine - if I ever had one. Thanks, I have been missing this in my diet.

Looks great. My first impression is that they're scalloped potatoes. Did they stick horrendously? It's amazing the vast makings with potatoes, each seeming so different. FYI, potatoes have a high heat capacitance. –noticed that once while looking up insulation values for materials, lol (ASHRAE).

Dyslexia kicked in, and I was like this is not a Perfect Baked Potato. Then I re read, and went, ohhh. LOL It looks delicious, but a better title might be perfect grilled potatoes au gratin. Either way, I need to make this next time I fire up the grill.
