Introduction: How to Create an Origami Owl

Ever since I was a child, I have found origami fascinating and pacifying. I enjoy making simple yet unique creations that surpass traditional models, such as the owl you can create following the steps below. I hope the craft helps you relax as well!

Supplies

  • A square piece of paper (8.5" x 8.5")
  • Scissors

Step 1:

Start with the paper slightly rotated so that it resembles a diamond. Then fold the paper in half, corner to corner and unfold. Repeat in the other direction.

Step 2:

Flip the paper over and, with it positioned straight this time, fold it in half, creasing well, then unfold. Repeat in the other direction.

Step 3:

Rotate it to look like a diamond again, and use the creases made to bring the three corners to the bottom corner by tucking the side corners in and following them with the top corner. Then flatten the model and crease well.

Step 4:

Fold the upper flap of the two side corners upward and toward the middle until they are lined with the center. Crease well and unfold.

Step 5:

Fold the upper flap of the top corner down until the crease lines up with the top of the triangular flaps just created. Crease well and unfold.

Step 6:

Pull up on the upper flap of the bottom corner and, while pushing the sides inward, bring that corner to the top. Then flatten the model and crease well.

Step 7:

Now flip the model over and repeat steps 4 and 5, creasing well.

Step 8:

Fold the top flap down. Then flip the model over and repeat.

Step 9:

Fold the upper flaps of both side corners downward until lined with the center and crease well. Then flip the model over and repeat.

Step 10:

To create the wings, pull the inside corners upward while twisting them forward. When in place, press down and crease.

Step 11:

Fold the top corner down until the point meets the bottom of the flaps at the center.

Step 12:

Fold the newly created top corner flap upward at the line indicated.

Step 13:

Fold the top down as shown.

Step 14:

To create the feet, cut a small slit up the bottom corner's center, but ensure ONLY THE UPPER LAYER is cut. Then fold the newly created flaps up and outward.

Step 15:

To create the ears, flip the model over, ensuring all flaps lay flat, and cut two small slits through ONLY THE UPPER LAYER, as shown. Then flip the model back over and fold the ear flaps forward.

You now have an origami owl!
