How to Crochet a Clutch

Intro: How to Crochet a Clutch

Hey there! Thanks for checking out our tutorial for our Red, White & Bae mini clutch. We love tech lingo & thought why not make a statement outside of social media with this simple crochet clutch?! If you're new to crochet, you'll need to learn 3 techniques before you can make this clutch: 1.single crochet; 2. crochet in the round; and 3. changing colors. If you're already a crochet jedi, we're honoured to have you trying out our pattern.

Let's begin making the clutch, shall we?

You'll need the following materials

  1. Purse Chain (you can either use an existing one you have on your purse, or get one on eBay)
  2. Sewing needle & blue thread
  3. 3.75 mm hook
  4. 3 skeins of cotton yarn (1 blue, 1 red, 1 off white). We used 100% cotton yarn called MUSKAT from DROPS design.

STEP 1: Make the Foundation Row

STEP 2: Work 9 Rows in Red

Work 9 rows in sc using the red colored yarn.

TIP: You can tell the start of the next row by the bottom of the entire piece. We’ve marked it with the crochet hook in the picture above.

STEP 3: BAE Pattern Begins

FYI:

Rows 10 - 16 you’ll be alternating between red and white

Rows 17 -19 you’ll be alternating between blue and white

PATTERN

Row 10: sc 9 in red, 4 white, 1 red, 2 white, 2 red, 2 white, 2 red, 4 white, continue in red until the end of the row (49 sc).

Row 11: sc 9 in red, 4 white, 1 red, 2 white, 2 red, 2 white, 1 red, 5 white, continue in red until the end of the row (49 sc).

Row 12: sc 11 in red, 2 white, 1 red, 2 white, 2 red, 2 white, 1 red, 2 white, 1 red, 2 white, continue in red until the end of the row (49 sc).

Row 13: sc 11 in red, 2 white, 1 red, 6 white, 1 red, 5 white, continue in red until the end of the row (49 sc)

Row 14: sc 9 in red, 4 white, 1 red, 6 white, 2 red, 4 white, continue in red unitl the end of the row (49 sc).

Row 15: sc 9 in red, 4 white, 1 red, 2 white, 2 red, 2 white, 2 red, 4 white, continue in red until the end of the row (49 sc).

Row 16: sc 11 red, 2 white, 1 red, 2 white, 2 red, 2 white, 1 red, 5 white, continue in red until the end of the row (49 sc).

STEP 4: Change From Red to Blue Yarn

Row 17: sc 11 in blue, 2 white, 1 blue, 2 white, 2 blue, 2 white, 1 blue, 2 white, 1 blue, 2 white, continue in blue until the end of the row (49 sc).

Row 18: sc 9 in blue, 4 white, 2 blue, 4 white, 2 blue, 5 white, continue in blue until the end of the row (49 sc)

Row 19: sc 9 in blue, 4 white, 3 blue, 2 white, 4 blue, 4 white, continue in blue until the end of the row (8 sc)

STEP 5: Make a Chain Space

Work 7 rows in sc using the blue colored yarn, until you’ve reached the first stitch in the 8th row. Here is where you’ll be making a chain space for the purse handle: [*sc 1 sts, chain 2, sc 1 stitch*, sc 35 sts, repeat between * *]

Continue with the sc across to the first chain space. Once you’ve reached the chain 2 space, sc 2 stitches in the chain space made to reinforce the stitch. Crochet around to the end of the row, and finish with a slip stich.

STEP 6: Sew the Bottom Closed

Turn the bag inside out, keeping track of where the two chain spaces are situated on both sides. Sew up the bottom using blue colored yarn. Add your purse chain and...

TA DA! Your BAE is all done and ready to be taken out on a date.
