Introduction: How to Draw a Simple Basic Mandala Using One Basic Shape Only

In this tutorial I show you how to draw a basic mandala using only one basic mandala shape.

Watch the video tutorial

Drawing a mandala requires tracing a mandala grid then filling it with shapes.

To learn more about how to draw a mandala grid you can check the following video:

Ready to learn the art of mandala?

Then let's start drawing!!

Supplies

  1. A4 white cardboard or paper
  2. 0.5 drawing pen (Artline or UNI Pin)
  3. Compass
  4. Protractor
  5. Pencil
  6. Ruler
  7. Eraser

Step 1: Mark the Center of the Paper

Using the ruler, find the center of the paper and mark a point that we will use to trace the circles of the grid.

Step 2: Trace the Mandala Grid

From the point we marked in the first step, trace 9 different circles with the following radii: 1, 2.5, 4, 5, 6, 7.5, 8, 9 and 9.5 cm

As for the grid lines, use the protractor and mark a point every 10 degrees, then trace lines that cross one of the points with the center.

Now we have a our grid ready to be filled with shapes.

In this tutorial we will only use the triangle shape and we will place them differently on the grid lines, as i will show you in the coming steps.

Step 3: Draw the Mandala

  • Color the small middle circle in black.
  • On the second row, trace a triangle on each 2 grid sections.

Step 4: Draw the Mandala

Trace a reversed Triangle between each 2 previous triangles.

Step 5:

Trace the outline of the second circle

Step 6: Draw the Mandala

Draw a smaller reversed triangle inside of the previous reversed triangles.

Step 7: Draw the Mandala

On the thrid row, trace a triangle on every two grid sections as shown in the picture.

Step 8: Draw the Mandala

  • Trace another inner outline on the left side of the previously drawn triangle.
  • Draw a small triangle inside that created space.
  • Color in black the very small triangles drawn on the second row.
  • Trace a triangle between every two triangles on the third row.

Step 9: Draw the Mandala

Color in black the smallest triangle of the third row.

Step 10: Draw the Mandala

  1. Retrace another outline of the triangle drawn between every two triangle on the third row and color it in black.
  2. On the 4th row, trace a triangle on every 2 grid sections, starting and ending from the summit of the 3rd row triangles.

Step 11: Draw the Mandala

  1. Trace another inner outline on the left of each triangle.
  2. Color it in black.
  3. In between each 2 triangles, draw one reversed triangle.
  4. Retrace the outline of the 4th circle.

Step 12:

  1. On the 5th row, trace a triangle on each grid section.
  2. On the 6th row, trace a triangle on each two grid sections as shown in the picture.

Step 13: Draw the Mandala

  1. On the 6th row, draw a smaller triangle between each two large triangles.
  2. Then trace a diagonal double outline on the outer side of the triangles.
  3. Color them in black as shown in the picture.

Step 14: Last Steps

  1. On the 7th row draw a triangle on every 2 grid sections.
  2. On the 8th row, trace a triangle above each triangle drawn in the 7th row.
  3. Then, trace a very thin triangle right on top of the triangle drawn on the 6th row.
  4. As a last step, trace triangles that start from the sides of the 8th row triangles and end at the outline of the 9th row.
