Have you ever had what the Aussie's affectionally call a "blow out" on your flip flops (thongs/sandals)?

Often it's just a single component failure where the disk that grips to the sole fails and sheers off. Before FixIts, this has been totally irreparable, making both the broken and still functioning half of the flip flop useless.

With less than one stick of FixIts you can repair your flip flops and save them from the bin.

Co-Founder of FixIts once repaired someone else's flip flops this way whilst at a hostel in Vietnam. 2 years later when he caught up with the guy it was still holding strong.

Step 1: Create Notches

Using a scalpel or sharp knife create small notches in the snapped area of the flip-flop (we've exaggerated the size for your reference here, but they can be a lot smaller). You can use a pen to help you mark out guides for where you're going to make these notches beforehand.

As FixIts is not a glue it doesn't usually stick, but is more like 3D printing with your hands. So, by creating these small cut outs, you effectively create undercuts for FixIts to grip onto.

Then thread the stem you've just added notches to through the flip flop as shown above.

Step 2: Soften the FixIt Stick

  • Heat your water to above 60 degrees celcius! We like to use it straight from the kettle in a warm ceramic mug or glass.
  • Dunk you FixIts stick (or leftover pieces) in the hot water for at least one minute or until fully softened. The hotter FixIts gets the softer it will become and the more time you will have to work with it. Thicker left over pieces may take longer to fully soften.
  • Remove your FixIts from the hot water when fully softened.

Step 3: Pinch Some Off

Pinch off what you need and save the rest for later!

Step 4: Fix It

Mould FixIts around the broken part of the flip flop stem forming a shape similar to the size of the gap it needs to fill. Gently pushing the FixIts into the gap to fill it. Try not to pull at the thread until FixIts has fully cooled.

Step 5: A Tip

As the flip-flop needs to have a totally flat surface to walk on you may need to adjust the moulding you've just made to get it just right. Soyou can reheat the FixIts using more hot water or hot air from a hairdryer to soften it again so that you can reshape and pinch off bits here and there to make it a perfect fit if you weren't able to the first time.

Step 6: Back to New!

Once you've perfected your fix and FixIts has fully cooled you're ready to get going again with your repaired flip flops.
