Introduction: How to Identify a Fake Samsung Micro SD Memory Card

About: I've been creating YouTube video for around 2 years now and love being able to bring my knowledge to the people who need it most. With my broad range of interests, I find I like to figure out Technology and he…

Fake memory cards are out there and identifying one is sometimes hard. I recently got burnt, but managed to chronicle how I knew the card was a fake. Follow there step by step instructions to determine if your Samsung Micro SD Card is a fake or not.

Step 1: Complimentary Video

To go along with this Instrucatable, I've also shot a video that you can watch and experience first hand.

Let's get started!

Step 2: Check the SD Card Adaptor

Before even opening the Samsung Micro SD Card packaging, have a look at the SD Card Adaptor. Pay close attention to the printing of the words. Check to see there is not misprinting as this is a quality control issue that wouldn't escape a real Samsung Micro SD Card Adaptor. If it text also doesn't have really sharp crisp edges, then you may be looking at a fake.

Step 3: Check the Hole Punch on the Packaging

Generally, every Samsung Micro SD Memory Card that I have purchased had the hole punched out of the top of the packaging. If your doesn't, then this could be another sign that the memory card is fake. It's not a complete positive, but it does lean more towards the side of being a Fake Samsung Micro SD Card.

Step 4: Check the Samsung Micro SD Card Quality

On closer observation, the edges of the Fake Samsung Micro SD Card was black. On all official Samsung Micro SD Card, the plastic edging is white. When they manufacture the fake micro sd cards, the costs involved to have the edges white is too expensive, so this is another giveaway. Black edges on a Samsung Micro SD Card always means it's a fake. Also check the text sharpness on the face of the micro sd card. If this is not sharp or a little bit off, you can guarantee that it would not have passed Samsung's quality control.

Step 5: Check You Model Code on the Back of the Packaging

If you have a look at the bottom right hand side of the packaging, you will notice a Model Code.

Something like MB-MG32EA/EU or MB-MF32DA/AM or MB-MS32D/CN

The /EU means the product is meant for sale in Europe and Australia.

The /AM means the product is meant for sale in America.

The /CN means this product is meant for sale in China.

If you don't live in China and you receive a Samsung Micro SD Card with the model code ending in CN then you could be a victim of a fake micro sd card.

Step 6: Check the Made in Statement on the Back of the Packaging

On the bottom left hand side of the packaging is the statement of where the product was made. Official Samsung Micro SD Cards are generally Made In Philippines and will also be followed by:

Adapter made in China and guaranteed for 1 year

The fake memory card I received was Made In Korea and did not have the adapter warranty line.

Step 7: Testing the Samsung Micro SD Card on the Computer

Download the H2TestW software to check if the capacity of the Micro SD Card is correct. The 32GB Micro SD Card I got failed after testing 16GB. Counterfieters are able to modify the cards reported storage so it may appear on the computer to be 32GB but once it's tested with H2TestW, the results clearly show it is only 16GB.

Step 8: Conclusion

When you are buying cheap memory cards, just stop and think that maybe there's a reason it is so cheap.

I bought 2x 256 GB class 10, U3 Speed card recently which turned out to be fakes. I got them from different vendors, almost a year apart yet they were both FAKES. Here are some images I took.

So bought my card awhile ago and use it for my Xperia Z2, I know Sony does some weird things with using SD cards but thought I'd check. The white edges I had were a very thin white coat and I was able to scratch it off very easily. My phone doesn't read the SD card anymore and will constantly state there's an issue to fix. And the card will try to format and it won't go past 20% then the it'll say the card is ready to use but won't show up. I don't remember where i bought it, amazon or ebay I'll have to check.

Step 2) Look for misspelling of adapter.
*Adapter & adaptor are both correct spellings of the same word.
Otherwise A+ helpful instructable
Thank you for the tips, I feel more prepared to make the purchase on ebay now.
Unfortunately bootleg sellers aren't honest & don't like when you ask if their cards are knock offs lol,🤣😆

Oh god, that is impossible without this guide.

Ciao. Vengo dall'Italia e ho ricevuto una scheda Samsung Sd con codice modello: "MB-MC64GA / APC".
Cosa significa APC? È normale?

For the rest I checked and I would say it's original

On the back of the package it should say authentication available with a check mark right next to the 10-year limited warranty if it doesn't have it it's fake

Ok update. The card I bought 128GB,
The hole was not munched through that's 1
Tha adapter the printing was not sharp and crisp it was blurry and smudge that's 2.
I'm america and it had the code CH at the end so that's 3
Oh sorry the adaptor also had no writings on the back. That's 4
The ad card says made in Taiwan on the back that's 5 the actual packaging doesnt say Authentication Available with a check mark like the real ones that's 6
And the plastic it comes in , the real one has plastic on bothside front and back folded down the middle it's one piece the fake one is just one plasti open on the back. That's 7.
I just got it in the mail today , so that's what gave it away for me. Also purchased on Ebay .

How do i tell if my micro sd card is fake?
I can't use a pc to check as I don't own one and my friend ordered this card for me and it didn't come in any branded packaging just a plastic case with the card and a adapter.
I have added some images of the card so if you can take a look and help me I would be very grateful thank you.

this is actually a really good Tutorial. i ordered a samsung 256gb micro sd on ebay, it looked real, and was a little bit cheaper then the others, so i bought it. it has a black side, made in korea e.t.c, right now im testing it in H2testW to 100% verify it, but i think i may be reporting them to ebay soon :/

Edit: one thing im now seeing in the comments is that the back has text on a real one.if i could find my real adapter i would confirm, but i cant find it. mine is a blank back, so its most likely a fake.

Hello
fyi, I 've found with a samsung fake card, after finding a blank back of the micro adapter and bad report from 2testw v1.4, that the card identifies as unknown when trying to format on my pc!
And the retail pkg. has the hook-hanging slot uncut out, and the brown color is lighter at top of the card pkg.!
Remember if the Ebay price is too good to be true, the card is probably fake!
BTW, I have three factory true Samsung cards and they are all white-edged, but so is the recently bought fake Samsung card!!
'just checked my fake 128 Samsung card with sd insight- It is an invalid 32 gig phoney!
