Introduction: How to Make Coconut Oil Deodorant
Most people know that big name brand deodorant and anti-persperants are full of parabens and harmful ingredients such as aluminum and perfumes. It’s no secret that coconut oil can be used for pretty much anything and it can be used to make a highly effective probiotic deodorant too! Give this recipe a try.
You will need:
• ½ cup coconut oil
• ½ cup + 1 tsp beeswax
• ½ cup shea butter, mango butter, or cacao butter (you can even mix all three in equal parts to one half cup)
• 3 Tablespoons baking soda (anyone with sensitive skin can use extra arrowroot instead)
• ½ cup arrowroot
• 2-3 capsules of a high-quality probiotic that doesn’t need to be refrigerated
• Optional: 1 teaspoon vitamin E Oil
• Optional: Essential oils of your choice (try 20 drops of lavender oil, frankincense, or citrus.
Step 1:
Put coconut oil, shea butter (or another butter of your choice), and beeswax in a glass bowl and put it on top of a smaller pot or saucepan that has approximately 10 centimetres of water in it. You can also combine ingredients in a mason jar and melt the ingredients in the water as well. If you have a burner, even better!
Step 2:
Once ingredients are melted, remove them from the heat and add in the vitamin E oil, arrowroot powder, probiotics, baking soda, and essential oils. Make sure the mixture is warm and not too hot too touch. This will help keep the probiotics alive.
Step 3:
To be more gentle with stirring the ingredients, use your hand to stir until all ingredients are mixed together well.
Step 4:
To make bars, pour into muffin tins or other molds before the mixture hardens. You can also use an old deodorant container by letting the mixture harden at room temperature for approximately 15 minutes until it’s almost a peanut-butter like consistency. Scoop it into your deodorant tube, packing it down until it’s full. Leave the cap off overnight to allow the coconut oil mixture to completely harden before use.
