Introduction: How to Make Gaat, an Eritrean Breakfast.

Today, I will be making Gaat, which is a spicy Eritrean breakfast, where we traditionally eat this when a baby is born.

Supplies

(most of these ingredients can be found in an Ethiopian or Eritrean store)

-Tesmi ( It is a butter that we add garlic, red onions, cardamon, fenugreek, melted)

-Tihne (barley flour)

-Berbere spice( chilly pepper, garlic, fenugreek, onions, red pepper, cardamon, coriander, cloves)

-salt

Step 1: Boil the Water

Boil hot water, then, save some water on the side, in case the dough gets too thick.

Step 2: Add Salt and Thine

Add salt in the boiling water. After, add tablespoons of thine until the dough is as thick as a mashed potato while stirring. Then add a drop of water, and let let it cook for 5 minutes.

Step 3: Melt the Tesmi

Melt the tesmi. Now, get a round plate, put a drop of the butter on the plate, then pour all the tihne on the plate.

Step 4: Shape the Dough

now that you put the dough on the plate, hold the plate, then roll the dough around the plate and flip it once on the other side. Now, you will have a smooth side of the dough, then start shaping it with your hands like a mountain, then open a hole in the middle halfway in depth, like a volcano.

Step 5: Add Ingredients in the Hole

Fill the hole with the melted butter, then add one teaspoon of berbere and salt. You can add as much berbere as needed. Some they also surround the Gaat with natural yogurt for more hot and cool taste.

Step 6: Enjoy

Enjoy this delicious, spicy volcano breakfast.
