Introduction: How to Make a Comically Large Hair Comb.

I decided to design a large hair comb as a gag gift for my friend with long hair.

Supplies

-Filament

Step 1: Problem?

So my friend with really long hair is always playing with it and using his hands, which is unsanitary. And as a gift, I want to make a comically large hair comb for him. It would be a bit efficient. (He gave me permission to use a photo of him)

Step 2: Research

So I searched the dimensions of hair combs and I came across this image. I decided to base my design on this, but to make it "comically" large I design to scale up some of the dimensions. I made the entire thing 24in long rather than 6.5in with the handle being 10.5in long and 3.5in wide and the actual comb part being 13.5in long and 8in wide. I also made the entire comb 1in thick.

Step 3: Ideas

These were the ideas/inspiration I had for this comb. At this point, I didn't know what the dimensions of the final product were going to be. But I did know that I wanted it to be big. And I knew some of these were going to be a problem if they were big. The combs with a lot of teeth would probably be a problem when it comes to printing. They would've taken an abysmal amount of time to 3d print. So a hair comb with fewer amount of teeth would be optimal.

Step 4: Design

I eventually chose these two to be my design/inspiration for the comb. I was going to use the measurements of the first image and scale it up. But I wanted it to look like the second image which had fewer teeth and had a better look to it overall compared to the first image. I based all my dimensions on the first image but upscaled of course. For the teeth, I used the upscaled dimension on the top of the first image but I subtracted the handle width so I would have the perfect dimensions.

Step 5: Bottom Handle

  1. Make a sketch pane on the top plane.
  2. Make two lines that are 2.5in long and make them parallel to each other.
  3. Then make a third line that is 3.5in long.
  4. After making the first two lines perpendicular to the third line. So that they are attached.
  5. Then make two more lines that ate 1.5in long and attach one to each end of a 2.5in. This will make them parallel to each other.
  6. Also, make a that goes from the two 1.5in long lines from the last step if done right this line will be 3.5in long.
  7. Now do select the sketch fillet tool and then select the top 3.5in line and the left 1.5in line after set the radius of the sketch fillet to 1.5. Now repeat this to the 1.5in line on the right.
  8. Now click the inner grey part of the sketch and then select the extrude tool and extrude the sketch by 1in by clicking the green check button.
  9. Then go to the left of the shape you just made and click the top and bottom line, then select the fillet tool and make the radius .25in after click the green check button.
  10. Then make another sketch plane on flat face of the extrude, now make a box that is 2.75in long and .65in wide, and center it on the extrude by making it .175in from the top and .375 in from the right and left.
  11. Then select the box you just made and extrude it 1in.

Now you're done with this step.

Step 6: Handle

  1. Now make a new part studio.
  2. Then make a sketch plane on the top plane.
  3. Now on that plane make a rectangle that is 6.5in long and 3.5 inches wide.
  4. Then click the inner grey part on the rectangle then use the extrude to make it 1in thick.
  5. Now select the left and right edges on the extrude and use the fillet tool and make the radius .25in.
  6. After that make a sketch on the front flat side of the extrude.
  7. Now make a box that is 2.75in long and .65in wide, and center it on the extrude by making it .175in from the top and .375 in from the right and left. Then extrude it by 1in.
  8. Then on the back side of the extrude make another sketch plane.
  9. Repeat everything on step 7 but instead when you extrude select extrude remove 1in.

Now you're done with this step

Step 7: Bottom Comb

  1. Now make another part studio
  2. Then put a sketch plane on the top plane.
  3. Now make a rectangle 7in long and 3.5in wide
  4. After extrude the rectangle 1in thick.
  5. Now make a sketch on the back flat side of the extrude.
  6. Now make a box that is 2.75in long and .65in wide, and center it on the extrude by making it .175in from the top and .375 in from the right and left. Then extrude remove it by 1in.
  7. Then make a sketch plane on the front flat side on the extrude.
  8. On that plane make a box that is 2.75in long and .65in wide, and center it on the extrude by making it .175in from the top and .375 in from the right and left. Then extrude it by 1in.
  9. Now on the right side on the 1st extrude put a sketch plane.
  10. And make a rectangle that goes from the top edge of the extrude to the bottom edge of the extrude as well as make it .5 wide.
  11. Then make the right side of the rectangle to the right edge of the extrude so that the left side of the rectangle is 6.5in from the left edge of the extrude.
  12. Now extrude this rectangle 4.5in long.
  13. Then click the check mark and make another sketch on the same side of the 1st extrude.
  14. Make a square that is .5in tall and .5in wide and .1in away from the left edge of the extrude as well as make it .25in from the bottom edge of the extrude.
  15. Then make a square that is .5in tall and .5in wide and make it .25in from the bottom edge of the extrude and make this square .65in away from the other one. (Repeat 4 more times)
  16. In total, you should have 6 squares on the side, then extrude remove each square .38in depth.
  17. Then go to the left side of the extrude and with the fillet tool select the top and bottom edge and make the radius .25in.
  18. Now go to the 4th extrude a did and add fillet on the right edge of the end of the extrude and make the radius .35in.

Now you're done with this step.

Step 8: Top Comb

  1. Now make another part studio
  2. Then put a sketch plane on the top plane.
  3. Now make a rectangle 6.5in long and 3.5in wide
  4. Then extrude the rectangle 1in.
  5. Now put a sketch plane on the front side of the extrude and make a rectangle 1in wide that goes from the top edge and bottom edge of the extrude and make the right side of the rectangle along the right edge of the extrude.
  6. Then extrude the rectangle 4.5in long.
  7. Now put a sketch plane on the left side of the 1st extrude, and make a box that is 2.75in long and .65in wide, and center it on the extrude by making it .175in from the top and .375 in from the right and left. Then extrude remove it by 1in.
  8. And on the front side of the 1st extrude put a sketch plane.
  9. Make a square that is .5in tall and .5in wide and .64in away from the left edge of the extrude as well as make it .25in from the bottom edge of the extrude.
  10. Then make a square that is .5in tall and .5in wide and make it .25in from the bottom edge of the extrude and make this square .65in away from the other one. (Repeat 2 more times)
  11. In total, you should have 4 squares on the side, then extrude remove each square .38in depth.
  12. Go to the back side of the 1st extrude then select the left edge and use the fillet tool with .5in radius.
  13. Now select the top and bottom edge and use the fillet tool with a radius of .25in.
  14. Then go to the front side of the 2nd extrude and select the right edge and use the fillet tool with a radius of .35in.

Now you're done with this step.

Step 9: Comb Teeth

  1. Now make another part studio
  2. Then put a sketch plane on the top plane.
  3. Make one 1in long line and a .5in long line that is centered with the 1in long line.
  4. Attach 2 lines one on each end of the .5in line that attach to the other ends of the 1in long line.
  5. The lines should be 4.506939in long
  6. Now extrude the sketch 1in thick.
  7. Select every edge of the extrude except the ones on the front side of the extrude.
  8. On the front side of the extrude put a sketch plane on it, on it make a square that is .5in long and .5in long
  9. Center it by making each side .25in from each edge of the extrude.
  10. Then extrude the square .38in.

Now you are done with this step

Step 10: Assembly

  1. Now click on the assembly tab at the bottom bar and with the insert tool, insert 1 of each part studio except "part studio 5".
  2. For "part studio 5" you insert 10 of it.
  3. Now use the fastened mate tool and click on the face of the outdent of "part studio 1" and the inside face of the indent of "part studio 2".
  4. Then use the fasten mate tool to fasten the face of the outdent of "part studio 2" to the inside face of the indent of "part studio 3". (Make sure that the fillets line up beforehand, rotate them if they are not.)
  5. Now use the fasten mate tool to fasten the face of the outdent of "part studio 3" to the inside face of the indent of "part studio 4"
  6. Then fasten the faces of the outdents of the teeth in "part studio 5" to each their own square indent faces from "part studio 3 and 4"
  7. Each square indent should be filled with the comb teeth if done correctly

Now you are done

Step 11: Problems Along the Way

Due to the sheer size of the brush, I could not print the product in time. I also had a struggle trying to thoroughly explain the steps. I know if I had written the steps while constructing it, it would have been more efficient and would thoroughly make more sense to follow. Even though I finished this I do see that I could improve with the dimensions I use to make the comb. And I was limited with my time and my knowledge.
