Today we are making a dreamcatcher!

I still remember walking down streets and seeing vendors selling handmade dreamcatchers, and their unique patterns, colors, and accessories always appealed to me.

A few years ago in art class, I still remember making one, and today I wanted to see if I could create and teach you guys how to make one for yourself!

Dreamcatchers make great room decorations for children and personally, I like to hang them near my window curtains.

Let's get started!!!

Supplies

2 colors of yarn

Glue

Large Ring

Scissors

Optional:

Feathers

Step 1: Making the Ring

First, you want to grab your large ring. I 3D printed mine, but you can probably find one around your home or get one from your local crafts shops.

Afterward, you want to grab your yarn and tie a simple knot on the ring with it.

Next, you want to apply some glue to the edges of the ring. Once you have, start to tightly loop the yarn around the ring. Each time you loop the yarn, make sure to push the spool of yarn through the middle of the ring so the yarn doesn't get tangled. Also make sure to keep applying glue as you loop the yarn on the ring.

Finally, make sure that all the yarn is tightly wrapped around the ring. Apply more glue if needed to help the yarn stick to the ring.

Step 2: The Inside Pattern (part 1)

Now here comes the hard part...

First, grab your second spool of yarn and tie a knot with it on the ring.

Next, you want to place the string on top of the ring to create a line across the middle of the ring.

Afterward, you want to loop the yarn through the small hole formed, creating a knot to help secure the line. Repeat this 5 times until you form the shape of a hexagon.

Step 3: The Inside Pattern (part 2)

After you have finished the hexagon shape, take your string and locate the second side to the left of the last corner of the hexagon (Image 3). You want to loop your string through that side, and it should form a triangle.

Next, you want to locate the hexagon side straight across from the side you have just used (shown in image) and loop it through the side. (Image 4)

Now, you want to perform the same task, locate the hexagon side straight across from the previous side and thread it through that side's hole. You should have a triangle shape now! (Image 5)

Finally, you want to loop the string through the first side that you created in this step. You should now have a unique pattern in the middle of your ring. (Image 7+8)

Step 4: The Inside Pattern (Part 3)

Now, if you release some tension on the string, you should see 3 trapezoids along the sides and a triangle in the middle.

Moving on, loop the string through the side of the triangle left of the previous side (Image 2)

Next, loop the string through the side of the hexagon directly in front of the triangle side we just used. (Image 3)

Finally, take the end of the string and loop it into the side of the hexagon directly below it (Image 4)

Step 5: The Inside Pattern (Part 4)

We are almost finished!

Now, bring your string towards the middle and loop it through the triangle shown in image 1. (My finger is showing where to weave it through)

Next, flip your dreamcatcher around and look for the trapezoid to the left of the string (Image 2)

Once you locate the trapezoid, loop your string through it and you should be left with a pattern that is similar to the shapes around it. (Image 3)

Finally, find the last trapezoid that has not formed the pattern. This trapezoid should be located near the knot that you have tied, and once you find it, weave it through and tighten the string. (Image 4)

Now, bring string of yarn to a desirable place to end the pattern and glue it down (Image 5+6)

**Note

If your pattern looks a bit uneven, just pull the string until the shapes look even and if you want, you can glue it down for extra stability

Step 6: Adding the Hanger

Now, use your excess string to form a small loop that you can use to hang your dreamcatcher with. You can make it as large or as small as you want depending on your preference. Afterward, tie it to the dreamcatcher and glue it down.

Now you have an almost-completed dreamcatcher!

Step 7: Adding Accessories

Now, for my small accessories, I decided to add a wave of yarn in the middle of my dreamcatcher.

Cut up short strings and progressively cut them longer and longer.

Tie the smaller yarn at the edge of the dreamcatcher first and then use the longer pieces of yarn as you get towards the middle.

You have now finished!

***Note

For this dreamcatcher, I decided to keep it a little simpler since I didn't have any extra feathers I could use, but you could easily tie some feathers to the end of some of the strings. You could also use beads, glitters, and sequins to add more flare depending on your preferences :)

Step 8: Dreamcatcher

Congratulations!

You have finished making a dreamcatcher!!!

Hang it up in your bedroom and wait for some amazing dreams to occur in your sleep ;)
