Introduction: How to Make a Ping Pong Paddle
Want to make a custom ping pong paddle? It's extremely simple and I have a free template you can download to make your own!
Step 1: Download/Print the Template
Step 2: Selecting the Wood
For the blade of the ping pong paddle, I used 1/4" birch plywood that was roughly 8x10 inches. When it comes to the handle, you'll need some 1/4" thick hardwood of any species that's roughly 2x8 inches. I used cherry for my paddle, but feel free to use your favorite hardwood. Connect the templates to the paddle with some spray adhesive.
Step 3: Cutting, Sanding, and Glueing
Once you have connected the templates to the wood, simply cut them out and sand all your pieces until they are nice and smooth. Glue together the 2 handle pieces with wood glue or epoxy and wait for it to dry. Once it's dried, sand thoroughly once again.
Step 4: Applying a Finish
To finish the paddle, you can either paint it or you can use some type of clear coat. I prefer using spray on lacquer and you will need to apply multiple layers to get the best results. If you're painting your paddle, pick the color and apply the paint.
Step 5: Choose Between Rubber or Sandpaper
know you need to decide what material you want on your paddle. Sandpaper is great for speed and rubbers are great for spin. I like speed, so I used 150 grit sandpaper. I bought 2 large sheets of sandpaper and using spray adhesive, I connected the sandpaper to the wood. Once the sheet is connected, I used a razor blade to trim off the extra paper. If your using rubber, you can find rubber blanks online.
