How to Make a Wall Sconce in 5 Easy Steps (no Drill Needed)

Its never to late to start a brand new, but simple project!. The team at Plumen have been busy little bees thinking up quick and easy DIY lighting hacks for you to have a go at. Prepare your lights for a fresh and clean new look!

To start with we created a beautiful wall scone really quickly. This project doesn't need any power tools all thanks to our friends at Sugru, the creators of the world's first mouldable glue that turns into rubber (not a bad match for the company that created the world's first designer low energy light bulb!). So lets begin!

Step 1: What You Will Need to Make This Magnetic Wall Sconce:

Original Plumen 002 LED light bulb

Plumen Drop Cap Pendant (here in black but you can choose the colour of your choice)

Sugru Make Everything Magnetic Kit including Sugru glue + magnets

Scissors

Plug

Small flathead screwdriver

M3 Allen key

Step 2: Prep Your 'stickable' Magnets

First, get one single use packet of Sugru and two magnets (they come together in the Sugru Make Everything Magnetic Kit!).

Use the scissors to open the Sugru packet on all sides and divide the glue strips into two, and roll them both into a ball and stick them onto the magnets.

Squish them up into little domes that cover the full surface of the magnets.

Step 3: Stick It Onto the The Drop Cap Pendant

Next place one of the magnets onto the Drop Cap Pendant. When you've decided where you want the magnet to go, press it firmly onto the pendant. Smooth the excess Sugru around the magnet with your fingers to make it smooth.

Leave the Sugru to dry for 24 hours.

Step 4: Stick It to the Wall

Now stick the other magnet to the surface where you want your sconce to go, and in the exact same way you stuck the first magnet, press and shape the Sugru. Again you will need to let the glue dry for 24 hours.

Just so you know, Sugru does bond with all surfaces, but it works better on some more than others, especially when holding heavy objects. There are a few different techniques to applying Sugru depending on the surface, so be sure to check out Sugru's tips before you start your project.

Step 5: Wire a Plug Onto the Drop Cap Pendant

Our Drop Cap Pendant comes with a ceiling rose as standard, so if you want to plug it into a normal plug, you'll have to remove the ceiling rose.

Using the Allen key, loosen the grub screw holding the cable tight. Next, pull out the cable and unscrew all the wires from the connector block.

Then you'll need to attach the wires of the cable to the plug. If you've never done this before, we've found a simple step-by-step video from Youtube that could help.

Step 6: Place Your Drop Cap

Once you've waited 24 hours for the glue to dry its time to place your Drop Cap Pendant to the wall, and enjoy your beautiful new wall sconce!

There we go, a nice quick and easy way to make a wall sconce with no power tools. Another great thing about this project is that if you place another magnet in another room, you can move this sconce around your home!

Cool idea!

I was fully expecting there not to be a magnet on the wall. In the US the screws that hold the drywall to the studs (wood or metal) are fairly regular and (I think) you could definitely get away with just the magnet (Neodymium) on the sconce itself. And that would solve your question, Penolopy. Magnets make for a stud-finder in a pinch for this same reason. Just hope your drywall guys didn't miss the studs too.

Clever idea! Very minimalistic :) When it comes to removing the magnet from the wall (down the line when you don't want it anymore), do you know how to go about doing that?
