Intro: How to Mix Natural Peanut Butter

If you like to eat natural peanut butter, such as Smucker's brand, you probably know the big problem: you have find a way to stir the separated peanut oil back into the settled mass of semi-deoiled peanut butter. The least messy and most reliable solution I've found is to use a old Rock Tumbler to stir it back up.

STEP 1: Quick Tips

  • Generally 1 to 2 hours of tumbling does the trick
  • Optionally, turn the jar upside down for several hours before tumbling to get the oil layer closer to the middle or bottom of the jar
  • Monitor the jar during tumbling to make sure something bad does not happen: Yuk!
  • Note: I have not tried this mixing method yet on chunky style

Maybe a wrap of tape around the lid to prevent the "something bad" that could happen.
I was using a 3/4" dowel with a plunging motion until the consistency allowed stirring, and it was hard work! I don't have a tumbler, but there's always the clothes dryer, and maybe the heat will speed the mixing. As always, remove immediately to prevent wrinkles.
Good idea about the tape. Normally I do this mixing before opening the jar, so the lid is very tight and also Smucker's comes with a clear "tape" around the lid. But yes if you had already opened the jar, or have a different brand, make sure lid is tight and tape around lid might be a good idea.
