Intro: How to Ride a Horse in Minecraft

I love to ride horses in video games, so when I found out you could ride a horse in Minecraft, I had to give it a try. I talk about this some in my instructable about Minecraft Animals/Mobs, but I wanted to devote an Instructable to how to (tame and) ride a horse in Minecraft.

STEP 1: What You Need

In order to ride a Horse, all you need is a Saddle. Unfortunately, you cannot make a saddle, you have to find one. You can find them occasionally in chests around the world.

Optionally, you can put Horse Armor on Horses (not Donkey's or Mules). This also can only be found, not crafted.

You can equip a Donkey or Mule with a Chest to have it hold supplies for you (you cannot add a chest to a Horse).

STEP 2: Taming

Before you can ride a Horse, you need to tame it.

The way to tame it is, while not holding an item, click on the Horse like you would to use an item. The Horse will most likely buck you off. You need to repeat this until hearts appear, but you can also feed the Horse Apples, Wheat, Golden Apples, Golden Carrots, Wheat, or a Hay Bale to help tame it.

Now your Horse is tamed.

STEP 3: Riding Your Horse

Once your Horse is tamed, it will no longer buck you off, but you need to put a saddle on it before you can control where it goes.

Either get on the Horse or point towards the Horse and open your inventory menu. This will open up your inventory and the Horse's menu. Drag the saddle up where the outline of the saddle is. Now you can ride.

Optionally, put armor on your Horse. It goes right below where you put the saddle.

You cannot ride in water that is deeper than 1 block. If you do, you will be thrown off the Horse and the Horse will start drowning. If you do this, use a lead to get your Horse out of the water so you can ride it again.

A horse can walk over flat land and over blocks that are 1 block high. I've read online that they can jump high, but I've only been able to get mine to jump 2 blocks high. To do this you need to hold down the space bar until the action bar (above your items) reaches the top of the blue (see image). Then let go and your horse will jump. Don't forget to go forward at the same time.

STEP 4: Chests

You can only use a chest on a Donkey or a Mule. To equip it, just use it on the Donkey or Mule just like you would use any other item.

Unlike saddles and Horse Armor, you cannot get the chest back from the Donkey or Mule. The only way to get it is to kill the Donkey.

i clicked it and it stood up on it's hind legs and said "hmmmmm".
ty very much for this information i am both a noob and a simp
You cannot make a saddle. You can only find one. You'll have to search chests in dungeons, villages, desert temples, etc.
They won't start drowning, they will swim. You may need to push them across the water and get back on. Maybe you were in a previous version of minecraft? Also, not all horses are even! Some horses can go faster, but only able to jump a block and a half high. Some go slower, but can jump 3 blocks (Maybe even 4, but I haven't seen or found one). I would suggest finding a horse that can jump 3 blocks, but goes at a moderate pace. Will save you a lot of time when traveling, as you often have to detour on foot or build over 2+ high blocks. You will have the same problem with a fast horse, but you can travel faster. Am I rambling? I don't care anyway, lol. You will find on many occasions that you can just jump over 3+ high blocks and save time by not having to go around or build over. Oh! I forgot: Also some horses are MUCH weaker than others. Some have 5 hearts, while others have 15+ hearts. The more hearts the horse has the the slower you go however. I don't know if this is the rule, but in my experience it has. I stick around 10 to 12 hearts as they give you good speed and that 3+ block jumping ability. I hope you aren't picky with your horse's color! You can find the great color horse but he only has 5 hearts and goes super slow and can't jump more than 2 blocks. Okay, that's enough rambling for one comment! Sorry, I am addicted to clicking the keyboard keys!
I have had a horse that can jump 4 or 5 blocks
Seriously, I have a typing problem!
Double oh! You can save food by getting a horse! By traveling on the horse, you don't run and use your drumsticks. This doesn't mean you won't lose food, as you lose food anyway by just doing nothing on normal and above. Now you can save those sweet sweet steaks you spent 20 minutes collecting!
Do you use shaders? If you don't I would HIGHLY suggest them. Depending on how good your computer/laptop. I run Sildur's shaders (Medium). There are other, lighter (As in less taxing) shaders but I have a pretty good PC. Just look up how to install shaders on YT or your browser, and you should be good!
I have not used shaders. I'll have to try them sometime :)
Yeah, I need to throw away my keyboard. Seriously! I've typed this much and feel like I could type out an in-depth description of my house and surrounding neighborhood!

Nice :D

(was about to complain about this instructable being to basic, then just realized I have indeed been playing for 4 years)

You seem to be becoming quite the expert in minecraft these days! I just recently read an article about Minecraft (and its philosophical communion with "block play", popular in Scandinavia) and it's made me really curious about minecraft, what it is, etc. Are there any "starter" resources you'd recommend for someone who wanted to play for the first time?

this was the article by the way, in the New Yorker: http://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/cover-story-playdate

Oh! Found it. You already wrote a great intro :)
