Intro: How to Sharpen a Metal Chisel

Video tutorial on how to sharpen a metal chisel. After usage a chisel can either dull or chip which does not make it work as efficiently as it should. A chisel can be resharpened to make it functional again, there is no need to throw it away. Make sure you wear safety glasses when doing this procedure. An angle gauge can be used, but is not necessary. The more practice you get, the better you will become at sharpening center punch. I do this by free hand, no special tools are required for the procedure.

Tools/Supplies Needed:

  • bench grinder
  • metal chisel
  • safety glasses

STEP 1:

The tip angle of a center punch should be about 60 degrees, this ensure it will work correctly and have a long life expectancy.

STEP 2:

When sharpening, the grinder wheel must turn in such a manner where it'll pull the material away from the tip. Ensure that you flip the chisel over to keep the tip centered and be careful not to overheat it so it does not wreck the temper of the metal. Also when sharpening, move the chisel along evenly on the grinding wheel which ensures even wear on the grinding wheel.

STEP 3: All Done!

Once finished you should be left with something such as this and the chisel is now ready to be used.

Nice :)
I'm going to try it at work, it is almost as sharpen a flat head screwdriver.

I have a rather large collection of cold chisels I get for cheap at thrift stores. They always price them real low since they tend to be rusty a lot and don't look attractive, but a wire brushing and a night in vinegar makes them look nearly new. Sharpen as you suggest and get to work, they really are quite useful in the shop. ☺

Thank you for your comment and awesome to hear :) Always good to see repurposes old tools, such a shame throwing some away.
