Introduction: How to Super Clean Your Windshield
Video tutorial on how to super clean your windshield. This can be used on both the exterior and interior of your windshield, along with other windows on your vehicle, mirrors, and glass lights as well. However this cannot be used on aftermarket tinted applications as you may risk damaging the tint film. The exterior surface of the windshield is exposed to some harsh element such as debris in the air, road grime colliding with the windshield when driving, bugs, etc. Once the windshield is exposed to extreme heat, it will become baked on and can be hard to remove afterwards. Normally you can feel the build up by gliding your fingers across the glass.
Tools/Supplies Needed:
- glass cleaner
- paper towel
- microfiber cloth
- carwash soap
- water
- microfiber wash mitt
- glass polish
- stepping stool
Step 1:
If you are working with a higher vehicle, I would recommend using something to elevate yourself so it’s easier to access the glass.
As an example dumping some water on the windshield, you can see how it doesn’t glide off the surface quickly. The exterior surface of the windshield is exposed to some harsh element such as debris in the air, road grim colliding with the windshield when driving, bugs, etc. Once the windshield is exposed to extreme heat, it will become baked on and can be hard to remove afterwards. Normally you can feel the build up by gliding your fingers across the glass.
Step 2:
Using a window cleaner of your choice, wipe away any grim, some of the lighter build up maybe removed depending on the cleaning action of your window cleaner. To clean a majority of the grim, use paper towel first. And then for a final clean, follow up using a microfiber cloth. This prevents the microfiber fiber cloth from becoming too dirty too quickly and a microfiber cloth also helps remove grim due to it’s material composition. I would also recommend cleaning the interior portion of the glass to help spot any smudging or missed dirty.
Step 3:
Using a glass specific polish, here I am using a product made by Auto Glym. Ensure the product is mixed, then apply a desired amount to a soft cloth and work it into the surface. Using the same process as when polishing paint, buff the glass in a circular pattern, applying medium pressure and add more product when needed.
Once satisfied, allowing any remaining glass polish to haze on the surface and buff with a clean microfiber cloth. Some procedure may vary depending on what product you are using, so be sure to consult with the product’s application instructions.
Step 4:
Now using the water test again after the glass has been cleaned. As you can see the water washes away quickly form the surface, not leaving any droplets behind. Have super clean glass will help reduce the chance of scratching from wipers, reduce the chance of more debris from sticking, allows the rain to bead off the surface quicker, and maximizes driver visibility.
If you wish an extra step can be taken to apply a hydrophobic coating which will further help repel grim and water.
