This is what it should look like...

STEP 1:

Start with the wide end of your necktie on the right, extending about  12 inches below the narrow end on the left.

STEP 2:

Then cross the wide end over the narrow end.

STEP 3:

Bring the wide end around and behind the narrow end.

STEP 4:

Then bring the wide end up.

STEP 5:

Pull the wide end through the loop and to the right.

STEP 6:

Bring the wide end around the front, over the narrow end from right to left.

STEP 7:

Again, bring the wide end up and through the loop.

STEP 8:

Then, bring the wide end down through the knot in front.

STEP 9:

And, using both hands tighten the knot carefully and drwa up to the collar.

Actually there are 85 ways to tie a tie (using "normal" knots, normal cloth length and a few other quite reasonable constraints). These are conveniently listed in a book:

No worries though, you can manage with one knot, even if your friend makes it for you.
