How to Use an Xbox One Controller on a Mac

Introduction: How to Use an Xbox One Controller on a Mac

I'm pretty partial to the Xbox One controller, and I thought to my self: "Self, wouldn't you like to play your Mac games with the Xbox one controller??" So, I decided to look into how to do this, and it's actually very simple to do. You can get this done in less than 5 minutes.

Step 1: Materials

In order to complete this you'll need to have:

  • Xbox One Controller
    • This can be a third party controller, an original (Xbox One v1) controller, or a new Xbox One Controller.
  • Micro USB cable
  • Xbox One Controller Drivers
  • Mac

Step 2: Download and Install Xbox One Controller Drivers

Since the Mac does not natively support an Xbox One Controller, we'll need to download some drivers to get this working. To download the latest working drivers for this we'll head over to github.

You can download the driver here. Don't be alarmed by the name of the driver, "360Controller", this most certainly works with the Xbox One controller.

During the installation, you will be asked to reboot your computer. Make sure that you save all your work prior to completing this part of the step.

Step 3: Connect the Controller

Once the computer has rebooted, you can open up System Preferences and you will see an Icon at the bottom that says Xbox360 Controllers. Once again, don't be alarmed by the name. Click on Xbox360 Controllers, at this point you can connect the controller to you mac with the micro usb cable (make sure that your controller is POWERED OFF prior to connecting). Your controller will power on by itself and be recognized by the drivers.

Step 4: Play!

At this point you can launch your favorite emulator, Steam, or other platform and configure your controller through its settings to play. Enjoy!

Hey there. This is not working for me. I'm using a USB to USBC adapter. I plug in the xbox one controller to the USB part. Not detecting the controller at all in the system preferences. Any updates to the driver? I'm on MacOS Sierra version 10.12.6. Thanks

do you need an official xbox one cable chord or can you use any that fit into the controller to use this?
